Just got my main class (WHM) to 70 yesterday. First time I've maxed anything, and a buddy of mine who’s maxed his crafters gave me a set of ilvl 380 gear. I’d like to be actually be helpful in end-game content as we ready for Shadowbringers.
Now that I’ve got a class’ full toolset I’m completely redoing my hotbars and learning to optimize my role. Stuff like using Cure I to not overheal and proc the free Cure II cast, etc.
What’s a good resource to learn how to play the class well? Some of the abilities that were mildly handy in the MSQ like Break, Fluid Aura, and Repose don’t seem particularly helpful in raids or trials. I don't want to waste slots on things I'll never use.
Is Cleric Stance ever useful aside from catching a huge group with Holy or Assize?

Cast stone or holy in AOE as much as possible while managing for MP with assize,thin air and lucid. Try to use as little GCD healing as possible. Learn how to use cure 3 and the approximate range. Keep dots ticking too. Its a simple class Break,Aura and repose are more for lower end content. Cleric is not much I still use it because DPS is DPS and whm has very few buttons to map.

Go look at some reddit guide if you want something more comprehensive but I can assure you that it will bloated with garbage niche info. If you follow the game plan which is toss rocks,wind and light until someone's little finger scrape becomes an open gashing wound you will be fine. Also fuck shitty tanks let em die don't stress yourself at endgame trying to accommodate a shitty tank it will drain you.

But it’s a tanks job to hold emnity, why should dps do their job for them.

WHM end game is spamming stone and only healing when necessary and you should be keeping aero II+ III up as much as possible. with dungeons stun lock with holy spam and use instant casts (tetra/regen/benison/bene etc) to keep the tank alive.

Cure II or I may be used to top a tank for a big hit, but generally 90%+ of your cast bars should be for stone.

For raids healing is a process of trial and error, you'll need to learn when big damage comes and pre-cast healing as it deals damage, again you need to be aggressive with stone/aero uptime to make up for having fewer raid damage buffs.

Healers have one goal, use as little casted heals as possible.
Use your instant off globals untill you run out or the damage output is too high.
By the same token dont be the failure I had last night that just cast stones while the tank died, you have to find the balance.
And please dont be one of those "regen" healers that never cast Regen.

Best way to learn is bang your head repeatedly on end game content.

One thing you gotta learn is that healers primary function in this game is to dps. So optimizing your dps no matter how small is usually the way to go. Same reason you should use oresence of mind to increase your dps.

now that you can take every role action there's no reason not to put most of them on your bars
whm also has almost no learning curve

-medica II is better but don't overwrite the dot
-use cds to manage mistakes
-don't cast cure 3

95% of whm is learning mechanics so you can minimize gcd waste, in a group that isn't garbage you'll be spending at least half your gcds just spamming stone, you'll mostly only need to heal for aoe + tankbusters

Fluid Aura and Repose are useless. You should be using Cleric Stance on CD it's free damage. Break is shit, but it's also an attack that costs 0 mp so you can keep attacking even if you're nearly out of mana. You should always be casting on a healer even if that means spamming a shitty 50 potency attack. Most of your healing should be coming from HoTs and oGCDs. You can actually pretty much just take cure I off your hotbar. You try to cast as little heals as possible, so when you do cast them you want them to do as much work as it can to be worth the cast, and the freecure proc is basically useless since WHM already has the best MP regeneration in the game, and you'd have gotten the job done with less casts if you just used cure II in the first place.

tl;dr, if it's worth using cure I but not worth using cure II you should probably just let a regen handle it

Medica 2 uses less mana than Cure 3. You use Cure 3 for heavy consecutive damage and Medica 2 for everything else.

I did hear of the horrors on raid release with MP management though so its good to know whats more efficient when I do decide to give the expac a try unless the live battle letter has a suprise.

Nothing inherently wrong with the job, aside that it sucks at endgame. You feel overpowered while leveling up but then drop in dps hardcore when you hit 70. Also it’s the one job majority of bad players use, so their is a bad stigma about it.

No, the trick is to avoid gcd heals as much as possible by prioritizing ogcd heals. If you do have to then you use the thing that's the highest potency but also works fast enough. (Regen is higher potency than cure 2 but sometimes you can't wait.) If you keep regens on everything you will top the overheal charts and run out of mp and do no damage.
You don't have much to swiftcast besides using it for movement so yeah sure save it for raise if you want.

Free race change after the 2.0 main quest. (Level 50)

You don't keep assize just to heal though. And depending on the aoe damage and group position, medica 2 might be a better idea. I'm afraid healing isn't a one size fits all, sometimes the ogcd heals won't be the way to handle something.

Use Swift when you need it. It sucks to not have it for Raise, but you can also go the entire run without anyone dying which is a complete waste of the skill. If you have a SMN/RDM in the group then you can be a bit more liberal with your Swiftcast uses since they can raise too.

Swift is to save the party. How? You can swift a cure 3 while running to save the raid from a wipe,swift a cure 2 to follow another to keep the tank in the game WHM gcds are strong including res the more you do content the more you will know when these moments arise you will have an idea on how everyone HP should be looking like and where they should be. Its the nature of the role. The second it doesn't look right and you WILL know if you play enough swiftcast will make the saving play instant.

Its a learning curve, if you want to save Bene as a get out of jail card then do it until your comfortable.
Dont try and be 100% optimal while you figure shit out or are in a fight you dont know.
What youre getting is advice on how to be perfectly optimal, but no one can do that without practice and perfect knowledge of a fight.

I'm a blm that uses diversion when I can but I personally do not believe that the skill should be praised and thought so highly of. Tank and healer unga bunga dps I know is always nice to have but you should always remember you are a tank first and dps second.

Okay, now consider the situation where the other healer isn't healing very well, and multiple people are messing up mechanics regularly, because that's the content he'll actually be queueing into. Sure, he could just keep optimizing for DPS and let people die, but that's going to make it unnecessarily harder for him to clear with the bad players he'll actually have.

I played about a year ago. I leveled a Thaumaturge into a blackmage and got to max level. Decided I should level another job but didn't know how since I'd done all the quests and the prospect of every other job having to be leveled via grinding dungeons put me off. Also had no idea what the endgame consisted of since it didn't really feel like anything was explained to me beyond the repetable quests and some dungeons.
It's a shame because I really enjoyed the game of what I played, especially the character customisation. Every now and again I think about getting back into it but I feel i'll just hit the same roadblock again and stop.
