It being “trivial to implement” doesn’t mean it’s trivial to implement well. I realize this seems like a strange excuse but SM64 is full of a zillion weird movement bugs and glitches because of the number of “it’s just a raycast to check lol” loops that were included in the movement code. Every additional edge-case line check to make sure a certain thing is possible in a certain space creates room for error and code complexity that doesn’t need to exist.

I mean what does it really solve? A case where a joke long-play idle animation doesn’t quite look right when standing in a specific spot?

Yes, implementing this one single specific fix would likely not cause any problems, but it starts down a way of thinking about Mario’s movement that would lead to a ridiculous degree of brokenness. I mean, if he can’t idle-sleep on the edge, why can he stand on it? Shouldn’t the raycast also be used to fix the IK on his feet so he doesn’t toe-grip a railing while his other foot stands flat on midair? And what should that look like when he runs along an edge like that? Etc.

Bringing a thousand and one “that’s not quite accurate” animation tweaks and fixes to Mario’s interaction with level geometry will ultimately lead to a spaghetti code mess governing his movement and a bunch of weird edge-case brokenness like what SM64 has in spades.

It's good fun user, you should play it. If you want to get really autistic you can buy Automation too and make your own cars to drive in it.

You can tell that SM64 was made by people who had no real idea of what they were doing yet with the new 3D technology and were doing all sorts of experiments, because of all of that weird shit in the game.

A huge chunk of development was spent simply getting Mario's movements to feel right, so they were probably coming up with all sorts of new animations and pointless details, simply because they were still experimenting with 3D. That's probably where that sleeping detail came from.

Then theres how the game itself has weird stuff like this box thing. You grab it, it bounces around, then explodes. It serves no real purpose, yet they still added it, because of said experiments.

By the time Odyssey was made, they didn't need to experiment so much, so they probably simply forgot about some of the pointless details like sleeping on a ledge.

MGS2 and 3 have the best TECHNOLOGY ever seen in videogames.

Deus Ex may notice you going into the female bathrooms but MGS2 goes a step further with your support girlfriend being disgusted with your actions and refusing to save your game. The 64 example was probably a solution to a problem with Mario's idle animation causing him to fall off edges and there's almost certainly code involved in Odyssey that makes sure Mario gets into abs out of his idle animation no matter what size platform he's on. Neither one is necessarily better, but I do believe Odyssey made a deliberate choice to go out of their way to allow funny idle animations to happen.

However, adding it recursively made it an item on a list. Mario needs to be able to sleep, because he slept in a past game. Several systems were already in place, and this became just another one of them. Less thought was required, so those same checks weren't made.

That is why things seemed to have more "soul" in the past, because they were the first time something was being implemented. They required more thought. That's all it is.
