Basically, they're unverifiable cards. Not considered to be monster, spell or trap while face down. Only way you can interact with them is through cards that don't specify a card type.

Links didn't really power creep pendulums. They power crept xyz in the same way xyz crept synchro. Pendulums are usually confined to specific archetypes rather than just generic monsters so they exist on their own

Links are 'stronger' in the sense that you can't really play anything else that relies on the ED without using them or you only have 1 zone to summon ED monsters to. This coupled with the fact that links can be summoned by pretty much anything (even tokens unless specified otherwise) made them the new spam deck with an additional benefit of if you spam the field with links too much you can 'extra link' i.e. link all across the field from one EMZ to the other - this then prevents the opposing player from summoning from the ED at all.
