The joke IS about how Ridley evolve from a curte animal to a big monster. There is the added layer of joke that he sit with cute animal, but the main gist is about how Ridley evolve.

At no point is there mentionned that replicating make the X weaker. If they copied you once, they can copy you as many time as they need.

It wasn't an after-thought, it was the root of the joke. that fact that Ridley evolve lead to thinking Ridley is a Pokemon, which lead the the situation of making Ridley sit at the Pokemon table with the contrast of the ugly monster with cute animal. But that joke can't come to be if there isn't at the source of it Ridley being a pokemon because he evolve. Otherwise, it's pure randomness.
