That's a valid strategy if you wear plate armor too or have a mate with you to help you out. It's not as easy to down a walking tank completely impervious to cutting damage as you think. Might want to wound him a little by bashing his head with a mordhau grip or get through the gaps with half swording first.
The cutting you fingers thing is a meme. If you hold the blade tightly you woun'r wound yourself, you might also wear regular ass leather gloves(which you should have anyway) to eliminate the chance completely.

Imagine you hit a tree with an axe really hard. Most of the time the axe might get stuck inside the tree and it takes a lot of force to get it out. Now imagine the tree is alive, has a deadly weapon in it's hand and is very angry that it got hit.

The part of the sword closest to the hilt (handle) wasn't sharp. It was made that way so it could be held and used as leverage to stab deeper or held to club someone.
