Emulating ain't a bad choice.
PPSSPP is pretty good, and you can pick up the roms from /mhg/ on /vg/
Freedom Unite, and Monster Hunter Portable Third are in the pastebin.

Play them on the Vita.

MH is one of those games that can kill consoles and controls OP, play it on emulator if you want your PSP or Vita to not get fucking destroyed.

Emulation is great for it. Especially P3rd since theres a PS3 HD texture patch for it so it's basically the best way to play 3rd gen if you upscale textures some. Also if you wanna bother with it, online is possible on both using PPSSPP.

Why would FU kill the Vita? You can even buy it on the Playstation store.

>Playing FU
>In 2019
Wew. Get yourself a 3DS or Switch. 4U and GU are leagues better than that Snoystation relic.

>Playing MH on the cramped controller that is 3DS

>4U and GU are leagues better than that Snoystation relic.
This is bait. I know it is. But GU isn't comparable to any mainline MH. It isn't objectively worse but it's nothing like the others. It was never meant to be. Generations was a 10 year anniversary celebration title directed by the guy behind Frontier.

As for 4U, it's flawed but pretty good and if you have the specs for it, also emulates perfectly*.

MHFU is a long and demanding game, your analog stick will fucking break, chancer are that one of the shoulder buttons will also stop working.

People clawed on the PSP. At least on the 3DS you have the CPP or a modded C-stick for camera control.

Play on a vita or the phone version.
Why would you play anything outside of gen u then, dumbass, it's the latest game.
It's pretty good actually, you can set camera on a touchscreen or the c stick. It's alright on a vita's second stick, but it's not a smooth camera and it's annoying

4U isn’t flawed. Flawed best describes FU with its abysmal hitboxes and heathsponge monsters.

depends on how comfortable you find the claw on psp and if you have a new3ds/cpp

Both are flawed in different ways. One is due to technical incompetence and limitations for the time, the other is due to poor design philosophy. Which problem is worse is up to the player to decide.

>poor design philosophy
Elaborate.

Yeah, but the C stick blows since it's slippery as fuck. No idea why they thought making it rubber was an okay thing to do.
Haven't tried using the touch screen for camera controls, but it sounds like a pain in the ass for monsters that have a lot of mobility.

You can mod it using an OEM (not Chink knock-off) PSP-1000 analog cap or Lenovo low profile Thinkpad cap. Works a million times better than the stock C-stick and the mod is easy to do.

Touch screen for camera controls is actually pretty good, but harder to reach if you have short fingers. C stick is alright, you get used to it, the only game where i actually had problem with it was xenoblade 3d.
>No idea why they thought making it rubber was an okay thing to do.
Less room, i guess. I think it was pretty clever, honestly.

RAW outclasses elemental damage on an absolutely absurd level. I assume this was a kneejerk reaction to slime from 3U.

Mounting is fine in theory but a pretty shit and shallow mechanic in practice. Makes for horrible pacing too

Due to the insect glaive, leaping, and mounting, the maps are cartoonishly vertical and feel like dogshit to navigate. This issue carries on all the way through World.

monster speed creep got particularly bad in 4U, making the older monsters somewhat jarring due to them still having the old AI and movement, while newer monsters are somewhat overwhelming because you're still stuck with the old movement system (mostly) but they're smoothly, and quicker than ever, zipping around like something out of Generations (but with no styles to make it reasonable).

jewel searching is dogshit

No free hunt like tri and 3U had

Online is worse in every way imaginable compared to Tri. Not in net code or anything but in features.

weapon balance in general is all over the place

Also although it has better hitboxes than Unite, 4U's hitboxes were a massive step down from 3rd gen. Some of the later monsters get just as janky as some unite shit.

Shut up tribaby

Lmao shut the fuck up
4U is perfect

I started on PS2, and I like 2nd gen, 3rd gen, and 4th gen. Doesn't make 4th perfect though.

You sure sound like a tribaby tho.

I've heard and may have to try it someday; however I still think emulation is the best way to go.
Like the other user said: hand-held consoles tend to be finicky and break in certain aspects.
Best to emulate for better controls.

Personally again I think the C stick gets way too slippery and is needlessly difficult to push for consistent camera controls.
I'll have to try touch screen if I ever get a 2ds, but monsters that are really mobile and quick worry me.
My 3ds has busted buttons so I dropped Gen, and never got to go back to 4U.

do what ever but monhun fu is the comfiest mh game because of Pokke village and playing it on a psp makes it even comfier.

Is FU an okay place to start for someone new to the series? I play a lot of old FromSoft games on PS1 (KF, Shadow Tower and the like) so I’m used to difficult games with janky controls. My PC isn’t powerful enough to run World or emulate 3DS.

P3rd's village comes close. P3rd's quest complete music is still my favorite probably even though it's the game I've played the least. It's basically them taking Tri and making it more like Unite.

P3rd with PS3 texture patch is probably the best entry point. Easiest one in the series but still city quests will kick you around, and far less janky. Unite has way more content though.

youtube.com/watch?v=nnAKMpxr1gw

I wish p3rd had g-rank. It's better than 3U in every other way.

I honestly hate FU.
3U on the piipoo is good but it's missing a lot of the moves 4 added to make weapons way more fun.
4U is good but has MASSIVE balance issues and a simply terrible endgame grind.
GenU is okay but styles are gay, lots of the content is meaningless and the online community took a HUGE hit when Nintendo jewed it.
World is good but it does feel different, without an SSD the console load times are intolerable and PC gets shit (a) month(s) late, also the PC online community is split by matchmaking regions (not a hard split, just the matchmaking won't find people in other download regions) which is fucking retarded. Also cheaters.

Pick your poison.

I think I’m just gonna go back to playing Dark Souls.
This series isn’t for me.

If you thought it was like Dark Souls in the first place then you're right.

FU is rough and won't treat you kindly at all, expect a lot of pain, frustration and cat noises.

It will force you to git gud or get stuck at either a giant palpitating electric phallus of a monster, cold monkey dick or my boy Tigrex.

However there is also portable 3rd, much easier a lot more refined and nice looking too.

>You can mod it using an OEM (not Chink knock-off) PSP-1000 analog cap
I did that, and while its 100 times better then the rubber nipple, it still feels really off over just a second circle pad or stick.

I quite like doing franchises in rough production order but in this series it only seems to make sense for playing the generations in order but I heard something about FU having literally all the content of F but more and better controls. Is it true? Is there really no reason whatsoever to play Gen1?

I though dark souls was like monster hunter, i was wrong.

Gen 1 is a fantastic way to suffer, put a solid 200+ hours into it in HS. 10/10 would not recommend.

FU is basically what gen 1 should have been from the start.

4>2>5>3>1 (because is dated as shit)

Don't play the psp ones. They aged like SHIT.

Start with 4 Ultimate or Gen Ultimate.

Why is 3 so low. For me it's 4u>3u>Fu>Genu>first one (barely played it)

I'm struggling with GU on Switch. The visuals and shitty frame rate hurt my fucking eyes that close to my face.

Because 3rd gen fucking sucks dude.

Imagine being this pleb

No it doesn't, learn to swim. Probably the most realistic maps and monsters, it feels like a completely different game because if that sometimes.

Can you play FU or 3rd online on vita? I don't have a switch so I either have to do online with World PC or 3ds Double Cross w/English patch

>Mounting. Nuff said
>horrible weapon balance. GS/IG/CB invalidate every other blademaster weapon in the game, while the Seregios Bow took a fat ogre shit all over every other bow including relics
>Pathetically easy up until endgame Guild Quests
>said quests are just RNG content for rng gear
>4 ruined Tigrex, Akantor, Ukanlos, and Brachydios by either neutering them(Brachy/Akantor/Uka) or adding a move that completely fucks the pacing (Tigrex's new turn around charge)
>on cartridge DLC
>wystones trivializing frenzy monsters and apex's shitty attempt to balance the game around them

Freedom Unite is still the king.

>Probably the most realistic maps and monsters
>Probably the most realistic monsters
>the most realistic monsters
>realistic monsters
Sure thing, explosive dildo head boxing dinosaur and electric break dancing wolf are realistic as fuck.

I was talking about 3 mostly, i didn't like the protable 3 monsters, honestly, they just didn't fit, except for arzuros and his friends.

pls.

TV mode nigger

should I play gen 1

exclusively handheld actually. sorry to hear about your eye strain, princess

No, play gen 2 it is basically gen 1 but fixed.

Bump

>Due to the insect glaive, leaping, and mounting, the maps are cartoonishly vertical and feel like dogshit to navigate. This issue carries on all the way through World.
this is by far the thing I wish would fuck off about 4U the most. Trying to angle my camera on the 3DS with everything being angled and up and down cliffs was fucking cancer.

Native

I killed my launch psp with about 4000 hours of monster hunter over all the games. I thought it was the analog stick at first but the motherboard started to break down around the stick before the analog stick gave up. I was never even really hard on the thing just the solder joints were fucked or something and once they started to go it just fucked everything.

If anything that sounds like a deficiency in the design, it should have some kind of bracing near the analog stick so pushing it to its extreme edge puts pressure on the plastic case and not any electronics.

Is Gen 1 worth playing? Redpill me

>having fun tanking everything and hopping around with my lance
>borrow a switch axe for an arena fight
>suddenly I'm zipping through the place at sanic speed
Fuckin a, any advice for getting the hang of this thing or is it a fairly straightforward weapon?

Gen 1?

If they're standing still just use the mash attack, if you're actively fighting your only goal is to reload your sword and get back to swording.

8/10 its shit - ign

Native. Emulating is for casuals.

For the 3ds games, you can actually redirect the input through your computer to any controller connected to it if you are galaxy brained enough. I find the 3DS controls adequate, though. My thumb is long enough so I can control the camera to the left and up without taking my thumb off the circlepad, and I use the touchscreen with my other hand to move it right or down when needed. It sounds more awkward than it really is, even coming off fresh from MHW. You shouldn't have much trouble with the controls for the PSP games if you are playing on a Vita.

Absolutely emulate
PSP emulation is flawless, the game is ten times better with a controller.
I haven't tried Citra but I'm never going to play monster hunter on a 3DS again because of the awful screen and hand cramp controls designed for tiny asian basedlet hands.

I got a lot of hours out of it and I tried to fix it but the solder pads came off the pcb so not much I could at that point. Can't really complain for a day 1 launch psp though.

Input redirection is fine and all, but if you're gonna be using a controller and tied to your computer anyway why not also play it with a decent resolution?

PPSSPP is a good emulator, so either way is fine for F1, FU, and P3rd.

3DS emulation by contrast is currently still sketchy. You'll likely have to find specialized builds of Citra to play 3U, 4U, and XX.

Because emulation isn't perfect, ESPECIALLY 3ds emulation. It also comes down to preference, I guess. I'd rather play the PSP games on the Vita than on my computer, despite PSP emulation being so good, but I've always liked portable gaming.

Playing 1st gen would be more for the novelty. Bonus points if you play MH1 on the PS2 with analog stick attacking.

God I hate FU Tigrex. durr charge durr charge durr charge durr charge durr charge

Play it on your PSP if you have one. It's very comfy.

Git gud

MH games are kickass on their native consoles, which is why MH moved to being a portable title in the first place. The combination of hour-grinding, MMO-like character progression and gear collection combined with the fast but methodical arcade-style gameplay makes a perfect game to carry with you everywhere you go.

That being said, FU hasn't aged that well but still has TONS of content. I would suggest getting a 3DS and playing the 3DS games because the touch screen is actually a super important tool for the game. Now that I'm playing GU on my switch, I really miss being able to have my combinations and lock-on toggles on the bottom screen. MH made some of the best use of the bottom screen you'll ever see.

I've been playing MH since 2006(F2) and played all entries until world, with over 5k hours in mainline and around 7k in frontier.

I think MH players really should stop comparing the generations to each other. Each one is great for different reasons.

My favorite one is Frontier cause I've been playing it for 6 years+, but I won't deny that 3rd, 4th and World Gen are pretty much all just as good.

You can just give me and my buddies a random console and MH and we'll have lots of fun regardless of the generation or the game.

MH itself is great, play it with friends for the most fun. Also to answer to your question: skip 1st gen, emulate FU and P3rd or play 4U/GenU on 3DS/Switch, World is best on PC (because of mods).

play the iOS version. the controls are much more intuitive and you can access your items faster because the screen is interactive

>play the iOS version
Kill yourself, retard.
