Decline in 2D side-scrolling game development

Stagnation and a tough time transferring from arcades to consoles.

You could say it turned into the 3d action games like DMC, the newer Ninja Gaiden, God Hand, etc. Dragon's Crown is a proper spritual successor to the Dungeon and Dragons and Golden Ax beat em up.

>Dragon's Crown
I wish they would port it to Steam, I'd play the fuck out of it all over again.

devil may cry 1 is the super mario 64 of beat em ups, the difference is 2d beat em ups didn't see a resurgence years later

Turns out this is really hard to pull off in 3D.

I literally buy 2D fighters just for the practice of chaining together combos against the NPCs and pretending I'm playing a really good BMP.
Most of my hours in SmUsh are spent doing this.

Because gameplay and some sweet music isn't enough for kids these days.

Huh, that's pretty much how I played Smash64 and Melee back in the day. Never really thought about it that way before.

There is only so much you can do with the genre.
The greatest comedy duo did have their own beat em up game recently though

It just transitioned into 3d space
Playing DMC or Ninja Gaiden is more fun than playing 2d beat'em'ups

Why do people call belt scrollers "beam 'em up"?

But it's been going strong ever since 2005

Aren't these games popular?

Mega Man and Mario are belt scrollers but not BMPs

Afaik belt scrollers always have a downward tilt camera; Rock Man and Mario are side-view.

l appreciate the SF style inputs but fuck. MMO. Hate having a stamina bar to play.

Yeah, but I wasn't gonna let some stamina bar stop me from enjoying a nice beat em up. I do wish DFO was a (good) offline game instead. Well, I can only hope if it ever gets shut down, it somehow gets leak so people can make private servers for it.

D&D: Shadow over Mystara was the pinnacle of the genre, prove me wrong.

No monk character.

You raise a good point.
A druid would've been rad, too.

Oic, good point. Carry on then.

It's pretty good, but I don't agree with the notion of there being a pinnacle because that implies it's the best and you shouldn't bother with others. Instead, I feel you should play a lot of them, for variety is the true pinnacle.

I really never understood the appeal of doing combos and stuff, but I can say that I dislike Bayonetta and Devil May Cry for the same reason I dislike Beat 'em Ups so I guess the answer is people got the itch scratched by 3D games

One is because combos would keep you safe from enemies (if you got them all together). Two is because keeping enemies from doing anything is fun in itself.

Anyone else wish they would make a great in depth beat 'em up RPG with a unique character creator and not shit combat and no nickle and diming people with microtransactions? Yeah I am certainly not talking about that crappy Korean beat 'em up MMORPG beat 'em up here. Something a lot better with more class.

Should I buy the Capcom Beat Em Up Collection

No, just emulate them.

A new game in the Chronicles of Mystara series but with customizable feats/spells would be cool.

You mean Guardian fucking heroes

Because it fucking sucks.

It didn't die. It became Musou.

the annoying pause everytime someone casts a spell ruins it for me.

It's not really dead , more like sleeping.

Someone will make one One day and we will love it.

I wish it hadn't, it's the GOAT couch co-op genre along with fighting games.

i really wish they weren't making Streets of Rage 4.

Wrong genre there my dude.

Isn't gauntlet A 3d beat em up?

What about gang beasts?

Gauntlet seems more like a top-down shooter with melee attacks. Isn't Gang Beasts a quirky fighting game?

Gauntlet is closer to a shooter than a beat em up.

There's a vs cpus mode in gang beasts that you fight against random little dudes while playing s level.

Probably one of the better modern beat-em-ups I've played in a really long time.

I played it when it first came out and remember the enemies were rather annoying because they maintained a perfect distance from you so I had to run into them almost all the time or let them come to me and hit them before they could hit me.

Dumbass. That game would be considered a shmup

This is why you don't button mash. When you know for a fact throw just an attack if they don't dodge then try to go in and do your usual combos. Also there's been a lot of hotfixes/balancing

Did they hotfix the chasing and milk shit?

These. By 6th gen, console dev kits barely even had support for 2D games anymore. It was strongly discouraged and a bitch to get working. People lost interest in 2D and wanted full 3D games.

But it went 3D too

Super Double Dragon was my favorite

It evolved into hack&slash.

>reach bebop and rocksteady in TMNT
>have to endless jumpkick them to death
fuck all of this, this has sapped my will to play, divekicking everything to death is a bigger slog than sword of vermillion

Who here /hyped/ for Streets of Rage 4?

I dunno but fight n rage was one of my best purchases this year

It’s trash
