Yep. Big hands are rare, and getting the opportunity for them is pretty much pure luck.
Dora are the special shining tiles that add a han to your hand just by having them present. Probably the most common way of getting big hands to have a bunch of dora tiles in your hand, but again, that's pure luck.

At the start of the game, a tile is flipped up from the dead wall and the tile sequentially after it is dora, which means having it in your hand is worth +1 han to your final score. The reason it's the next tile after is so there isn't one less of them in the game.

The shiny red 5 tiles also count as one dora and add one han.

Shanten 「向聴」 is the number of tiles needed for reaching tenpai.

It's not a stupid question, the subtitle saying "one away" is kind of confusing since tenpai is often called one away.
But yeah for future reference, anything with "shanten" in it refers to distance from ready and being able to call riichi, not distance from winning.

If you can't instantly recognize your shanten you're a brainlet

Imagine a hand that is tenpai. Now take one tile and replace it with a different tile, such that the hand is no longer tenpai. That's iishanten - your "shanten" count, or distance to tenpai, is one. Now take another tile and replace it the same way, such that you're neither tenpai nor iishanten. That's ryanshanten, where your distance to tenpai is two. And so on and so forth.

My idea of it is knowing when to fold is more important rather than trying to ping pong between building a eh hand and defense, and having someone else take the ron usually helps you. I go balls deep when I've got a good chance of getting a mangan or higher unless I see a monster hand building up somewhere, though.

It's just how far you are from one tile away from completing a hand, yaku or without.

Don't "go for" yaku, go for tenpai. If you try to efficiently reach tenpai, you'll often wind up with pinfu on top of your riichi anyway, tanyao pops up a lot too. Any other yaku are just a bonus if they happen to appear. Just keep trying to hit tenpai unless someone else gets there first. If that happens just alt+f4.

Know your yaku or you can't win.

Furiten can be temporary or permanent. The only way to get out furiten is win through Tsumo or change your wait. Changing your waits is impossible when you declared Riichi, which is why it's permanent.

You stop being in Furiten on a passed Ron after you discard a tile again regardless if you change your wait or not when not in riichi

All kans will flip a new dora indicator. All kans will add a net 1 tile to your hand but count as a triplet. A closed kan keeps your hand closed which is important for numerous yaku.

If you have an open pon on a tile and you draw a 4th on it then decide to Kan then you can get ron'd if that tile is someone's winning tile

concealed kans actually aren't that bad, if looking at the board state where you can or need to sacrifice some speed for value, they can work.
Just hold it until you either need to change what tiles your working on (like you have 67 and all the 58s are now gone), or until you're iishanten and try to collect a free han and some possible dora.
If you see someone building a strong hand, honor/wind kans can crutch you through 4 turns of discards.
Most players go wrong in calling other people's tile to make the kan, opening their hand without thinking about what that does to their yaku. When it's okay to open you hand is an entirely different conversation

Tanyao+Sanshoku doujun+Sanshoku doukou+Toitoihou

Tanyao, yakuhai, riichi, (half) flush, toitoi, chiitoitsu are easy for starters.
Some others like san shoku dou and ippeikou are intuitive, but a little harder to do. Just concentrate on these and if slowly work yourself through the list. If you have a shape that you think could be something, try to look it up in one of the yaku lists frequently posted.

Chiitoitsu is the bane of my fucking existence and I've gotten it once in dozens of attempts despite always leaving outs for iipeikou so I never forget it. On the other hand toitoi was absurdly easy in bronze but now extremely difficult in silver.
