What is your opinion on this gen's selection of JRPGs?
Based
Pretty mediocre. Gacha really killed Japan's creativity huh.
Star Ocean is literally shit and I can't believe Yea Forums hyped it up on here because a pair of tits in the game.
Dragon Quest is pretty much what you'd expect I guess, Nier: Automata was pretty good, haven't played Persona 5, the rest are just mediocre and coasting off the series history, Ys is probably the better out of the bunch though. This gen is nothing special.
this thread just reminded me I'd accidentally dropped it, don't know if it gets better later but the first few hours are immediately forgettable
even the misadventures of edge maverick and co had a more engaging intro
All of those are great except Star Ocean. It was just ok but definitely not bad at all. Another great one is Xenoblade 2. Jrpgs this gen are really great and I look forward to more great ones in the future.
nice
Is tales of berseria a good tales game to get into the series?
I played Tales of the Abyss and loved it, I played a bit of Graces F and Xillia but never finished them because my PS3 broke
Nu-tales has no good games
Is that really the whole selection? Because if it is it's rather Meh.
P5 had style. It was dripping with it. Easily the best looking RPG of this gen and the graphics didn't have to be hyper impressive. Easily over a 100 hours of content on your first play. The gameplay was just too repetitive, though. After P4 the gameplay was nothing new. Just added guns as an element. Find the weakness, exploit it. Only the bosses really had anything new and that wasn't enough.
Haven't played Dragon Quest, Y's or Star Ocean.
NieR was good. Good gameplay, great music, good story and good everything. Even had a Shin Godzilla hidden enemy. It was very good but it wasn't a masterpiece, though. Did we really have so little that good qualifies as a masterpiece?
Berseria was ok. I got really sick of the angst pretty quickly, though. Velvet started to piss me off before long and the game wasn't good enough for me ever want to put up with her shit to bother playing again.
Berseria is good
Velvet is super easy to play though so switch to a different character as soon as possible
or just play as her
>No Valkyria Chronicles IV
Bro at least pick something good
Any JRPG, dare I say any Japanese game, directed by someone who was not born in the 60s or 70s is guaranteed to be over-saccharine neurotic fapbait fanservice garbage and autistic author self-insert lecturing. Japan's newer generations make the mechanics of games just fine but are simply too fucked in the head by porn, Atlus and doujin degeneracy to create genuinely good vidya.
Most of them I have played have ranged from okay to good with the only real disappointment being FFXV (so bad I never bothered with any of the DLCs)
shit
Persona 5, DQXI, and Xenoblade 2 are the highlights.
I also love NieR but it's not much of a JRPG. Need to get around to Ys.
Persona 5>Dragon Quest 11>Nier Automata>Tale of Berseria>Ys>Star Ocean
DQ11 and P5 were okay but for games in a genre that has a large focus on narrative it was a bit of a let down. Haven't played those others. Overall this gen has been lackluster.
I feel sorry for people who are growing up with this trash.
>no handheld games
Persona 5 = 9.5/10
Dragonquest XI = 8.5/10
Ys8 = 9/10
Nier Automata = 1.5/10
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness = 7/10
Tales of Berseria = 8.5/10
Persona 5: cringe but great 9/10
DQXI: straight up excellent 9/10
Ys VIII: good but penalty for being nu-Ys 7/10
Nier Automata: action/adventure, not a JRPG, but excellent 9/10
Star Ocean: shit series, didn't play
Tales of Berseria: good story and characters but Tales just isn't very good generally 6/10
Dragon Quest XI by far.
I like that Star Ocean 5 has two casual filter missions. I had fun playing It.
Star Ocean and Berseria are 4/10 games at best. Even Turd XV is much better.
It's better than the PS3/360 era, but doesn't hold a candle to the SNES/PS1/PS2 era of Japanese gaming.
Pretty good. I haven't played Ys or Star Ocean though.
Nier Automata, 10/10 because everything is great. I liked Berseria too, but I'd rate that an 8/10.
Why are people's feelings about Automata so polarizing? Is it one of those games that's 2deep4u for some people and so they treat it like it's awful or what?
It doesn't get better.
It's the most generic RPG storyline ever. You don't ever get to go to another planet in a fucking SO game.
Rydia is a gentic experiment wanted by an evil organization and the good organization wants to stop them, blah blah blah.
The only decent character seems to be Miki. She's bland but at least she's consistently determined.
Almost everything else is ripped straight from SO3 without any of the Polish.
the one thing I'll give it is that the framerate is a consistent 60fps no matter what
Some people have never experienced a game more complex than Mario. They tend to assume games with themes of loss and rebirth are DEEP. These people also think Bioshock Infinite is the peak of storytelling.
Then there are people who haven't even played it but shit on it because they spend all their time hating one particular aspect, be it 2B's design or the lower-budget nature of Taro's games.
But there is a third crowd: the people who played it and thought it was enjoyable, or didn't much care for it and moved on. And that was that.
