Japanese games :
Always the same gameplay, artstyle, jokes, music styles, character archetypes,
They know what works (and what doesn't) and most of the time don't try to experiment further. You would expect that their mastery of basics would've led to innovation but it very very rarely happens.

Western games :
Greater variability when it comes to everything, western gaming is both the creme of the crop and the bottom of the barrel.
So alot of innovation (sometimes trying too much, with an approximate understanding of the basics), you get shovelware and GOTYs alike.

I remember thinking games were going to be so cool in 20 years in 1999. I thought with how fast things were evolving, games were going to have realistic graphics, fully destructible worlds, AI as smart as human players, RTS games with thousands of units on the screen.

I've watched tons of people I know irl turn into exactly that. We're talking people selling their PCs because their "console can do everything a PC can in one machine". It's much more prevalent than I could have ever imagined.

I talked in college about being excited for Diablo being on phones since I can't be bothered to boot up my laptop to play anything anymore, and the 2 neckbeards started giving me weird looks saying no one asked for Diablo on phones. After I had said I wanted to play it on my phone.

This one really hurts. When the 360 was banging, i had so many good friends in middle school and high school. We played tons of guitar hero, halo, call of duty, and phantasy star universe. Bioshock was big. I didnt have a wii but would go to peoples houses and wed play brawl or mk wii. Go through mario galaxy or twilight princess if it was just 2-3 people.

I go on normiebook now and these same people are total nu males besides the 2 guys im still friends with. Fuck the kikes for poisoning and neutering our people. They deserve nothing but hellfire for destroying a nation

And even Final Fantasy has a ton of variation. The first FF's play stupidly different from FF 6, and they changed things up for 7, then on X or whatever the one with Tifus. And XII was stupidly different, same with XIV and XV, and the PSP games Crisis Core and Type-0 are a religious experience that blew away all past Final Fantasy games with their gameplay. Not to mention the shooter from PS2.

For being the poster child of "Generic JRPG", Final Fantasy has too many variations.
