The game will probably be average at worst. Graphically it's already in the gutter but I wasn't expecting more from "pinlegs and potatofaces" IS 3D models and fujo supreme as the artist.

3H at least looks promising in terms of setting and story, compared to Fates and Awakening. And they're doing interesting things with the gameplay.

Apparently the gameplay, although I didn't see anything special besides the 2 final bosses, which were rather fun. The rest was just eh.
The character designs also had a lot of good stuff, and the monsters had neat designs, particularly the Golems.
Some of the music was decent, again the finale music being great.
The MyCastle was by far the best multiplayer and online has ever been in FE.

The characters behind the designs, there were a few decent ones but these were among the most irritating characters in the series.
The MyCastle allowed you to easily crush the "hard" maps, despite being optional. Saying not to use it is like saying "turn the exp share off" in Pokemon.
The generic map music had a lot of very bland tracks despite the climactic moments having great music.

Echoes was highly enjoyable for both new and old fans of FE.

That's impossible since the AI doesn't attack units who have too high defence.

There are only 3 kinds of enemy AIs

The ones who zerg rush at you
The ones who rush at you when in range
And the stationary that never move but attack when in range.

There's no such thing as an AI that "doesn't attack if enemy is too strong but does if enemy is too weak"

That is not true, AI in CQ doesn't attack if it will do no damage and a handful of groups won't move unless they can inflict lethal damage.

depending on the game enemies won't attack if your def or avoid is too high, in the afore mentioned conquest example sometimes enemies will ignore units like Effie or Xander if they do 0 damage or in fe4 where enemies often ignore Lewyn due to having 0 hit

What's the free-est beginner level XCOM game I could try out? Preferably emulate-able on PSP or DS since those are ez to acquire.

Echoes was only really good because it has some non-turn based gameplay, which is lacking in the rest of the series except Fates castle parts. The gameplay is by far the weakest element of all FE games.

Xcom:EW has a decent phone port and I heard that OpenXcom also has an android port

I was referring to Dungeons in Echoes, the personal castle in Fates.
The dungeons aren't great and neither is the castle but it's better than turn based. Just play Chess if you want a good turn based grid game.

I can do whatever I want, and I like FE, the gameplay just isn't good most of the time, the rest is usually enough to make up for it and then some. Echoes was just a nice surprise.

I guess it depends on what aspects you liked out of Echoes since Gaiden was a weird offshoot sort of game that only bled into future games in small random bits and pieces. Maybe Sacred Stones or Path of Radiance might be close enough to what you're looking for? Awakening's one option too if you haven't tried that.

Conquest has some really silly AI once you know how they work though. Like the enemies that won't attack a unit in melee range unless they're attacked first, meaning you can just crowd around them to set up.

You're right. It makes no sense to compare them since Echoes is a beautiful version of a flawed game. SD and NM on the other hand are garbage remakes of a good, if a bit too easy game. NM in particular is especially garbage since it's idea of difficulty is to just make enemies go first no matter what, cut scenes that were in the original, and added a self insert to steal the credit for everything Marth did.
