What games do self-insert characters well?

Each one of those DS9 episodes focuses on something bad happening to O'Brien as the central premise of the plot. The writers have admitted they tried to get in at least one O'Brien Suffers episode a season, to the point they very nearly had two ever season over the entire run of the show.

Meanwhile Michael Dorn had it put into his DS9 contract that he wasn't going to be the instant loss punching bag anymore, so even that one time he spends two episodes getting his shit kicked in he still comes out of it looking like the manliest Klingon who ever lived. His wife being murdered was because of Terry Farrel leaving the show, not anything the writers wanted to do. With O'Brien it was all active malice in the script room.

What games have romance options that are so meanspirited that when they get invaded by a literal embodiment of negative emotion you are able to tell instantly it is not them because they are being too nice?

I think it was because O'Brien's an everyman, he's not special or alien unlike every other main character so you find it easy to sympathise with him and Colm Meaney could pull it off when it comes to acting the part of a man suffering.

The reason O'Brien became a recurring character was that everyone in the writing room and on set liked Colm, so it's not malice as such against the man himself. Been interested in checking out Trek, and I tried to be non-pleb and started watching TOS to get an appreciation for the classic stuff. I like it, but started getting bored because it felt more like the Twilight Zone in space rather than all the cool stuff I keep hearing about later.

TNG was fairly overbearing with the idea that the Federation was the peak of human societal advancement, since Roddenberry's original vision was that humanity was literally perfect and no one even argued because they were all so in sync with each other, but DS9's message is still ultimately that the Federation is the best thing around in spite of its many flaws. No one who remains in the Federation challenges the basis of their society, just points out where it has strayed from its original, inclusive vision due to human imperfection.

Where TNG was more fantastical and optimistic, DS9 is more grounded and realistic. But they both say the same thing in the end.
