As far as id software and their engines go, Quake was the first true 3D engine. I mention game logic, but I also mention that the engine is entirely incapable of being TRUE 3D.

DOOM is not 2D and it is not 3D, but creates the perception that it is 3D, but is not capable of doing so in its own coded engine, meaning it is not 3D. The term you're citing applies only to visual representations. Objects (or "things") in the DOOM engine can move in three dimensions. It's not just a crafty illusion. Projectiles can travel diagonally up and down, enemies can fly over one another and the player can be launched (for example, by rocket explosions) over gaps or other objects.

What the maps can do and what the player can do are two different things. Also, only Archviles can launch actors because they have a scripted code based on what actor they are attacking. Rockets cannot, they do not have that ability outside of source ports.
Again, the actors or things, have their own scripts. This is called "game logic". It was something I was called out on. The space in the map, that is rendered, is the engine.
OK? Following me. There are two things here; the capability of the game logic and the capability of the engine.
The engine is NOT 3D. It is visually 2.5D because the game logic allows it to be perceived that way. However, it is more than 2D.

So, if it's more than 2D and less than 3D because it both "looks 3D" but does not function in "3D", we call it... 2.5D.
