Why didn't they just make him Makoto? Scrambled Makoto Naegi name, visually intentionally designed after Makoto, is supposed to represent hope and luck. Would have carried more weight if you recognised Makoto from the start and his manic development later on would have more weight.

the character design is pretty similar and its not very visual novel-y, as it is a "dungeon crawler" with survival aspects. it focuses a little bit more on gameplay like the zero time/999 series does
