>implying that's not an insurmountable task for most people here

It was really fun to solve, Phil is 22.

I'm way to tired for this. The last part of the problem isnt even registering for me.

9

It's 22, but is the question weirdly worded? I seriously felt like I was having a stroke the first few times I read it.

22, Paul is 11 years older than Phil

Yeah, my mind is too busy trying to figure out the fucking riddle, let alone actually solve it. I think it's purposely done like this to fuck with you.

Its 4/3rds retard.

who is andre the giant

Explain

>33 years old

Now here's a tricky one

Attached: layton simple math 2.png (800x600, 90K)

Phil is 22 now, difference of 11 years.
When Paul was the same age (22), Phil was 11, which is a third of 33.

I never trust puzzles posted here because you fuckers love to post impossible ones, but this one looks solvable.
It's 22, but fuck writing the equation for that, I would guess it'd be something like
3Y = 33
Y = 11
//
X + Y = 33
X + 11 = 33
X = 22

I swear this is all fucking logic problems. The majority of time spent answering is trying to reword the question to make sense

A giant

His brother is 99 years old

Right so he’s three times older than his brother. It doesn’t matter what age reference point you use, he will always be three times older than his brother as stated in the first bit. That doesn’t just change over time.

the whole point is being able to parse information in a complex structure and making it comprehensive

it's already solved, do you want me to open it?
(3x+5)(2y-8)
6xy - 24x + 10y - 40
well?

user...

Oh shit I see what I forgot to do lmao thanks.

I've been up for close to 40 hours now and my brain just shut the fuck down trying to comprehend the wording.

I haven't done anything higher than basic algebra in years. Do you have to set both of them to zero or something?

3X=9+5=14+2Y=Y=-=12-8=4.

there's nothing to solve here

>pulls numbers out of his ass

It's easier if you first formulate their ages and then think about going "back to the past y years", reformulating and then finding the ecuations

user it says he's "3 times older than his brother WAS"
33 is 3 times 11
Phil was 11 when Paul was Phil's CURRENT age (22)
Phil is 22

Alright anons, let's see if anyone can figure this out.
Give me the last 2 nonzero digits of 90! .

Seething brainlet

Solve what?
Layton, you fucking imbecile.

...solve what?
That's a fucking expression, not an equation.
You want the roots? y = 4 and x = -5/3

>he will always be three times older than his brother
Are you retarded

99 98

Yes, but that's the mathematical equivalent of cheating. Any dumb student can solve basic equations with low numbers through trial and attempt, but you need to be able to reliably find the equation without that. The answer itself is worth nothing compared to being able to write the equation, because that's how you guarantee you'd be able to solve the same problem with bigger numbers

ok, what am I solving for?

22

77 and 75

Wrong.

Brainlet detected

Multiply both numbers on the left with both numbers on the right
3x * 2y = 5xy
3x * -8 = -24x
5 * 2y = 10y
5 * -8 = -40
then list them out in order
5xy - 24x + 10y - 40

Nope again.
You guys don't know what digits are.

38

oh fug, right, non-zero. didn't read.

meant for

Nope again, random guessing won't work.

Digit=number non-zero=no zeros in number
You= sub-80 IQ mentally-ill retard
Me= big sexy

I think you got it wrong, i did wrote the ecuations, it's just an easy way to do it. You need to think about the algebraic expressions of their ages before and after going back y years, then relate those with the information given, getting two ecuations.

ok Yea Forums you can't SERIOUSLY tell me you can't solve this

Attached: 1557642996098.png (1042x804, 139K)

12

Well anyone can do that. I thought there was an actual way to solve for x and y.
At least I'm not that stupid.

Correct. Nice cheating.

actual only correct answer. since pennies don't have "a tail" they have a side called "tails"

kill Leftie to create Hitler

Now this is some good bait.

Equations is the appropriate spelling, just wanted to let you know.

Without the fluff:
>go right
Kill a bad guy.
Save 10 people.
"Unjust war free of war crimes" ensues.
>go left
Kill a good guy.
Kill 10 other people.
Save 20 other people, among them literally Hitler and someone who will cure cancer. Most of them will live either way but you're not supposed to know that.
"Just war fraught with war crimes" ensues.

Also, all, none, or some of the above is a lie.

I think that's all of it.

I've been in two threads with this puzzle and I still can't grasp where people get the number 22 from. Guess I'm a brainlet forever.

If you translate the problem into equations you get 4 equations and just solve it

Now:
Paul = 33
Phil = X (22)
Then:
Paul = X (22)
Phil = 11

When Paul was 22, Phil was 11, which makes current Paul 3 times older.

Any age but 22 doesn't work but I don't know how to actually get to 22 without a process of elimination.

You're retarded.

How so?

Let p=Phil's age.

Pauls was as old as Phil (33-p) years ago.
At this time Phil was [p-(33-p)] years old.

"Paul is three times older than his brother Phil was when Paul was the same age Phil is today."

So Paul's age now = 3 x phil's age when paul was as old as phil is now
=> 33=3 [p-(33-p)] = 3[2p-33] = 6p - 99

Rearranging => 6p = 33+99 => p = 132/6 =22.

Phil is 22.

The wording is purposefully confusing, read it carefully. Paul isn't three times older than Phil. He's three times older than Phil was in the past.

Dunno, ask your parents.

fpbp

They told me they don't know. Can you help me out?

All you need to do is to take multiple of 11 into account and reading the question correctly. There's no elimination involved.

*ruins your franchise*

Attached: nigger.jpg (295x1000, 49K)

Year 0: Paul is born
...
Year 11: Paul = 11, Phil is born
...
Year 22: Paul = 22, Phil = 11
...
Year 33: Paul = 33, Phil = 22

Therefore, Paul is 3 times older than Phil was back in Year 22, which was also when Paul was the same age that Phil is in Year 33 (aka today).

That's how I think you'd be better off solving this question, treating it in purely temporal terms rather than mathematical ones.

Obviously I didn't get the answer on my own, just saw it in this thread, I'm just posting this for other brainlets like me who found the algebra impenetrable.

>paul is jesus

Too old

kill itself

a fookin choclate coin mate

A turd

I got this
Phil's age = P
Paul's age = L
Phil's age when Paul was Phil's age = X
Paul's age when Phil was 3 times younger than Paul is now = Y
Age difference between Paul and Phil = Z
P = Y -> We know Phil and young Paul's ages are the same
X + Z = Y = P - > We know that young Paul's/Phil's age is the the difference between the two ages added to young!Phil's age
We don't know young Paul's/Phil's age, but we know Paul's current age
L = 33
We know young Phil's age is 3 times the size of Paul's current age
3X = L
3X = 33
X = 11
X + Z = Y
3X - L = 0
X = L/3
L/3 + Z = Y
Y - Z = L/3
...Yeah I don't get it.

see, you're retarded

Attached: 1316310109492.png (493x402, 7K)

Paul is 33
33 is 3x as old as Paul USED to be when Phil was 33
So Paul was 11
It's been 22 years
33+22=55

I JUST DON'T GET IT

How can you solve this shit with math alone?

This makes sense but it requires you to count up both brother's ages, rather than use any math to solve it, beyond 33/3. Seems like the slowest way possible.

...
