I decided to try it out because it's a really big and popular game... but it's just not fun? I feel like I'm missing something because this game is just really boring and frustrating. You literally only have 3 abilities and you keep running into the enemies and then have to keep retreating, spending most of your time running back and forth from the main base to heal, or you try to 1v1 someone and lose(?) somehow. I just don't understand what's going on when there are a million different characters and abilities and items, and I don't want to have to study this crap for hours and hours to understand the game enough to at least have fun with it. I'll be fighting this one guy in the top lane the whole game by myself and I'll lose most of the fights because I don't know how I'm supposed to outskill someone if I only have 3 abilities, but eventually, I just get a game over screen because the other lanes were lost. I did this about 3 or 4 times before I got bored of the game. I understand that being good at this game is hard, but so far my experience has just been awful.
I really feel like I'm missing something, but are all the people who play this game masochists?
Its addictive. Yes, it's terrible. The only reason to learn to play is peer pressure. Just walk away OP. Don't look back.

This entire genre is the epitome of "it gets good after X hours"

>but are all the people who play this game masochists? You figured it out no need to play it any further or any moba for that matter.
Jace Cooper
I can vouch for these two posts. These are your answers OP. Just tell your mate to fuck off/play a different game; that's what I did.

It's genuinely a really shitty game. And you haven't even got to the worst part. farming minions most of the game
Joshua Brown
That's the big thing I don't understand about it. So much of the game is focused on killing the minions and hiding in your tower. You'd think the game would be more interesting if it was focused more on fighting the enemy hero more
Oliver Watson
It was actually better back in 2010, in beta, before season 1. Season 1 and especially Season 2 the game went really downhill fast. I have no idea why anyone would continue playing it aside from college students who are doing it to get laid because the game is so boring and simple that even girls can play supports with some success.
Without going into much detail, league and dota are the epitome of "it's fun with friends" or something like that, except most of your friends just rage unless you're pubstomping.
And then it gets worse, once you realize...
The problem is lots of people when I was still playing it cared about perceived skill, like, getting gold in a season, or diamond rank, or whatever, and wanted to try to use it as like, social status or something.
Most of the people who play it are kind of just stuck in the habit. It's easier for them to queue up and "DO MY DAILIES" than force themselves out of their comfort zone. Also for a 5v5 game there's a surprising amount of just 1v1 or 2v2 / lack of meaningful interaction between players.

Learning to play a MOBA in general is like learning how to play an instrument. You can't just play a few games with bots and be like, "Well, it's ok." You seriously have to have a passion in learning the game and getting better. My drive of learning this game because everyone else in my circle of friends were playing and I love it even though it can be shitty at times. If it's something you don't want to grind out get the fuck out of mobas you pussy.
