Mixed bag. In some moments it's galling how stupid he is, but when he actually does act like a total bro and pulls through for the rest of the group is played off like a throwaway joke. So he's decent, but the way the story handles him isn't.

It's clear who best boy is. It's Kanji closely followed by Yusuke.

Yosuke is such a nothing character but then again, so are most of your teammates in Persona 4. They just don't have the motivation to make the hunt for the killer interesting, plus Yosuke and Chie don't even have the luxury of getting an arc dedicated to them. Yosuke had potential with the Saki thing and his parallels to Adachi but that kind of fizzled out.

Ryuji is probably the best in terms of likeability and motivation but I can see his stupidity being polarizing. I love Ryuji because I don't care about his big mouth seeing as the only time it really mattered was when Makoto was eavesdropping, and that was a hilarious scene anyway.

Just as overall characters? Junpei is the best-written one. As overall "bros"? Ryuji is a bit better than Yosuke, both of which are quite better than Junpei.

Ryuji is a weapons-grade tippy-top-tier great bro for exactly one palace and then drops off a cliff afterwards. It’s insane how likeable he is at the start and how they totally piss away any goodwill he had built up from it. If Ryuji was consistently as well written as he was in the first palace he’d be the best character in the entire franchise.

Junpei is the opposite, where he starts the game as a jackass and becomes more likeable and reasonable as it goes on.

Yosuke has no redeeming qualities. He’s a nearly totally static bog-standard bootlicker from start to finish.

His shadow arc is only worse than Teddie's, which they just ignore outright.
Yosuke never grows at all, maybe this is the fault of the game for putting his arc literally in the fucking prologue.
Yosuke is only tolerable if you don't really pay attention to him, which i think is what most people actually ended up doing, because most people who have any understanding of his character hate him, while anyone that says they like him just say something similar to "Yeah, but he's your bro".
The group chemistry would unironically be better if he was not part of it.

It's a shame that P2 posting has died down again. The boost in threads the past two years was nice.

Anyone who rejects any official cannon from arguments surrounding character personality that don't involve fundamental rewrites of the character is on the defensive, because tests of personality can always be presumed to be done on a character that has or has no actually undergone that particular plot beat.
