CEO has been taking huge bonuses, thus bankrupting the company.

Eurogamer had a good, long article about modern Overkill/Starbreeze’s retardation. Basically, overconfident CEO gobbles up more than the company can chew, including ideas of creating a new ”revolutionary” engine for reasons nobody fucking knows. Not the first time a game company dies because of overambitious CEO, neither will it be the last time it happens either.

How are they not swimming in money with all the DLC they release?

They wasted all their money on a shit TWD game no one bought, as well as a VR headset.

Don’t forget said CEO passive-aggressively accusing everyone else when the truck full of shit hit the industrial fan.

h3h3 dlc

Interest in modern shit games is waning and the entire industry is fucking dying, as it should be.

They acted as a publisher and consultant for a flop game no one wanted(Raid WW2), they purchased the rights to an engine that no one on their team could work with and was underpowered, so they had to then purchase the rights to another engine, they spent tons of time and money making the walking dead game, which at one point had to be completely restarted from the ground up, the CEO has an enormous paycheck for the size of his company and actively scares off talent by attempting to intimidate competent workers, and to top everything off they sold Dead by Daylight back to the dev for cash so they could try and keep the publisher side of their company running to attract indies that never came.

For the longest time it was the Publisher side (Starbreeze) that was killing the company, not the developer side that was
OVERKILl. But the walking dead changed that completely, now both sides of the company are massive leaking ships.

overkill keeps making bad games that no one buys

Gamers are entitled pieces of shit

>stop releasing $10 DLC every other week
>wonder why you stop getting big ass paychecks
WWOOOWWWWWWWWWW

The Starbeeze-Overkill merger/creation has always been a drain on Payday 2, the publisher PR company that is Starbreeze has been hemorrhaging funds since its inception and was only kept afloat by Payday 2 DLC. Now that Payday 2 doesn't have paid DLC anymore and the game's base has shrunk, Overkill isn't making money either, so the whole company is fucked. Starbeeze was supposed to be a big indie publisher like Chucklefish and Devolver but they never really accrued the funds or devs to do so and every game they did publish with the exception of Dead by Daylight was a flop and half. That's not mentioning the fact that the CEO purchased the valhalla engine for use as their main internal development engine for about 10 million dollars without having any real idea how the engine worked save for the fact that it was supposedly vr friendly, light weight and handled modular environments well. Turns out the Valhalla engine is incredibly unstable, out of date, hard to work with, and has literally no support built into it, so before they ever could get to use the engine to try and develop a game, Overkill had to try and essentially update an engine they barely understood that was cobbled together with features that barely functioned and was known to crash and destroy hours of progress. They used the Valhalla engine for just under a year and never produced a single asset or line of code that would go towards The Walking Dead. A whole year worth of salaries for game developers went to waste on engine development instead, something they were trying to avoid in the first place by purchasing Valhalla.

They deserve it, fucking idiots.

What’s up with small-to-midsized studios and their power fantasies about running their own engines? I mean, when you have fits-for-every-size-and-need solutions like fucking UE available, why risk it?

Developers are entitled pieces of shit
Publishers are entitled pieces of shit
"Journalists" are entitled pieces of shit

did starbreeze ever make a great game? the riddick games were interesting but they are overrated af

By not innovating and instead putting out this kind of cheap trash

couple things

1. Buying your own engine means you get to keep 100 percent of the profit, no large licenses fees to Epic
2. The CEO was lead to believe that Valhalla was built with heavy VR support, it wasn't, it was a slapped on feature to sell the engine
3. Starbreeze, the publisher side of the OVERKILL, wanted to be able to license out its engine to indies as another way to attract indie devs for publishing
4. The Valhalla engine was supposedly built in with support for creating randomized elements in game environments, which is a big deal for games like TWD and Payday 2 because they always have slightly randomized objectives, paths, and deterrents.

The decision to purchase an engine was actually kind of sound...but they barely investigated the Valhalla engine and the ceo never fully understood it was a piece of shit, and also their company lacked software engineers to actually maintain the engine, and the publishing side of the company was essentially a skeleton crew to keep down costs and was acting primarily as a marketing front until they had funds to try and make another push for wide spread indie publishing again...

The whole point is they were trying to kill two birds with one stone, have a good engine for overkill development and have something they could entice indies with to save the publisher.

good programmers and game designers with shitty suits that don't know how videogames work in charge of steering the company.

>it's real
What the actual fuck

They have an ability to vape people to death

It's a shame because both Riddick games and The Darkness was great.

They blew all their money on blow and whores no joke

make a pewdiepie DLC and some other small DLC at 10 dollars each

have pewdiepie make t-series jokes and it will make money

Tons of terrible business decisions. The CEO is responsible for so many company losses for investing in useless shit.

>fund competitors to your own game
>pay out the ass for John Cleese to boot
