It's a really good video game. It uses the fact that it is a video game to the fullest extent, and takes full advantage of its gameness. The things it does could not be replicated by a TV show or a movie or a book. Not even a CYOA book or that episode of Black Mirror that let you choose the options. Also the girls are cute and the music is grand.

This is why it's the best VIDYA of all time. Most of the other contenders would work as well or better in other platforms.

That's not to say that it's better than the other games because of it. That user asked why Nier was so great and that's the reason why. Gameplay wise, it's not as good as something like Supermario 64 which would also only work as a game.
But Supermario is simply trying to be fun and it reaches that. Automata wanted to be a really novel experience and be an alright hack N slash, and it reaches that as well.

It's not as deep as DMC V or a Ninja Gaiden game in combat, but it's far more interesting and excels in all the categories that those games are weak in.

Ridiculous that mgs3 is higher than mgs2 , how can anyone like crouching for hours pressing start every 10 sec to change camo better than fast pace stealth action like mgs2 youngocelot the pain the fury and the fear and the boss are some of the worst boss design ever and don't even get me started on the obnoxious codec in mgs3, mgs2 bad Roses codex served a purpose in the end talking about james bond and the creature of the black laggon was cringey and a waste of time

I feel like what we have here are people not giving 5 it's due and drastically overrating 3 because it was Dante's last solo game despite being riddled with flaws. It did not age well.

Interesting, because I consider myself a pretty big DMC fan (started with the first when I rented it right before school started in 2001) and I played through DMC5 twice before shelving it. I like the series and like Dante (for the most part - Kamiya's version is the best, and he's great in Project X Zone) but about halfway through SoS difficulty I realized something: I've played this exact same game 4 releases in a row now. I got burned out. They need to switch it up a bit, because the wick gets shorter with each release. Yea Forums can shit on God of War all they want, and I'll have some ignorant teen replying to this post calling me a troll or whatever, but changing the entire formula of the series was a bold move with the 2018 "reboot", and I'd like to see DMC do something similar.

People who voted complain. People who saw the threads, but never voted complain. People who only see the end result complain. You will never find a true consensus, especially as long as they are numbered. The best bet is to just group up a large number of games into a picture, with no order, and just say "these are some of the best games ever made." Even then, people will still complain.

Chrono Trigger is overrated as fuck, in all honesty. It's a solid game but it's really not much more than above-average all around and fails to truly stick out for me, particularly gameplay-wise. I can think of almost a dozen JRPGs more deserving of the spot.

Fortnite is a better game than Nier Automata and Fortnite is garbage.

FF6 & Chrono Cross were unironically superior in every regard

Man, Ill never get why so people rate Automata as their favorite game ever. I love both the Nier games but heck dude, the combat in both, while the second being a vast improvement, are still so shallow. The chip system is downright awful too because of how easily overpowered you get on all difficulties. The narrative is pretty fantastic but there’s hardly any depth outside, heck even inside the main characters. 2B has pretty much no personality.

It's not the greatest story ever told, it sure as shit doesn't have the greatest gameplay, but it does things with the medium that haven't been done before.

The storytelling is okay at best.
It's on the level of the fourth Indiana Jones movie, complete with a fucking retarded twist at the end, and most of the cast could be replaced with cardboard cutouts and you wouldn't notice.
It's a brainless action movie in video game form, and not even a particularly amazing action movie like Hard Boiled. It's just solidly above-average third-person cover shooting, without much special about it.
You do raise a good point about it's generation, though. There was jack shit when it came to AAA stuff around the time.

I can agree that it isn't the best or anything like that, and definitely overrated, but to say it's unplayable is just admitting you're a spoiled, entitled zoomer, the game was remastered for the 3DS and played by new generations and it barely changed the core mechanics because even if a bit outdated , it still holds up enough to have a good time.

I'm playing OOT for the first time on a 3DS emulator and it's amazing. "Unplayable" lmfao, most modern games play the fucking thing for you, no wonder you'd find it difficult to do shit on your own

NieR, the first game, had more impact in its moments. Automata just kinda reconfirms NieR happened and slightly improves the combat. Vast majority of characters are too sterile/bland to be interesting. Even when one of the characters finally goes full Taro and becomes an absolute madlad, it just didn't feel like it did shit. Even when the game references the first one in its final ending, it felt really forced. Say what you will, the credits thing came out of left field and felt like a massive deus ex machina outside of Taro metaphorically dabbing on Square Enix.
Gameplay gets pretty braindead once you start doing hacking minigames and berserker loadout for shitting on things for their respective characters. At its core it's just really fluid NieR which was okay.
Music is pretty alright when it's not trying to be atmospheric, though if you haven't played the first game's it does less for you.
Overall it's ratherplaykh2criticalmode/10

Google tells me little that's relevant to my current playthrough aside from the Water Temple which I'm currently in. I don't know how that was changed, but I've been more engaged in this than most major releases over the last few years. The only game that drew me in harder would be Rain World and BoTW, though for different reasons. If this is how good the game is after 20 years, then no wonder it's widely regarded as the greatest game ever made

As someone who's played both, outside of some aesthetic changes there's very little different. The biggest change was that in the original, you had to use the pause menu to equip/unequip the iron boots like you would a tunic, which was pretty fucking annoying but only really relevant for one dungeon and you didn't need to do it THAT much as long as you didn't get lost.
