My first foray into TM was the OAVs, while I think for most (especially American) audiences it was the TV Show, Universe.
I think that's where a lot of the assumption that Ryoko is the default girl comes from, I even assumed that myself after interacting with the fanbase and how everyone talked like she was the female lead. But actually going through the OAVs again when I got older, it really felt like they pushed Ayeka with Tenchi way more, Ryoko is sidelined for huge parts of the plot and often gets basically pushed to the background as comedy relief, while Ayeka commonly gets romance scenes with him.
Harem end is canon so it doesn't really matter, but Ayeka was my first waifu and it was nice going back and seeing that she wasn't actually as marginalised as the fanbase seems to think sometimes.

One of the creators made it up as her background and it's only in doujins and shit that Westerners wouldn't have access to. The doujins are kinda shit though, but in line with the third OVA, which is trash, and involve Tenchi marrying and impregnating all the girls instead of being forced to choose one and only one.

It's one of the reasons I think the Isekai genre has taken off like it has, everyone else does harems as a cop out, to the point where when a new girl is introduced it feels mean-spirited. She's there, only to lose. It's lame.
The whole genre is about pandering (I mean come the fuck on) and yet the authors are all too coy to actually pander enough to have all the girls win? Why not? No-one's taking "Normal guy keeps having hot virgin-sluts try suck his dick: The Anime!" seriously as a work of art, let it be fun. Isekai actually does that.
Alternatively: I'll always respect Shinmai Maou and Majika no Kenshi for doing this so goddamn well in a non fantasy setting.
