Except what people can do with the editor is far more interesting than anything Nintendo has done with 2D Mario in the past 10 years. Sure, stuff like romhacking tools and fanmade custom level engines exist, but the former isn't nearly as accessible and the latter is rarely as fleshed-out as Mario Maker is. People could already make some absurd shit using the mechanics of the first game (people were basically programming new mechanics into the game with the machines they could build), and now with how much they're adding to 2, it's looking like things are only going to get more complex from here. For example, the community's reaction to the addition of ON/OFF blocks weren't "oh cool, a block that appears or disappears when you hit a different block," even though that's what they literally are. Their reaction was "Oh shit, you could make some fantastic logic machines out of that!" And you know that they're autistic enough to do it, and the result is that you have the interesting 2D Mario shit Nintendo *could* be making but aren't because they're too busy making the next samey NSMB. Mario Maker is basically the antithesis of NSMB.

Most level editors of that kind only allow you to do as much as the designers of the original game could do, though. If it were only as much as that, I could totally get calling Mario Maker nothing special. But MM has always been built to allow for complex possibilities, and people are still figuring out new things to do with it even as it's about to be replaced. Anything with that level of depth can't be called "just a level editor."

Every game is the same deal: New tracks, prettier graphics, and a new mechanic that is advertised as the gimmick but doesn't actually make a very big difference when you're playing the game. Anything they could possibly release would just feel like a DLC pack for 8 Deluxe. And 8 Deluxe has sold so well there's absolutely no need to replace it.

Not so much after the leadership changes at both places. Because of the censorship by Sony, previous Vita exclusives Gun Gun Pixes and Mary Skelter 1 & 2 are coming to Switch in the west.
Going forward, I think the Switch will be more of a Vita 2.0 for those kinds of games.
Because mixing it with a touch pad means you can make levels REALLY quickly and adjust them to your heart's content with basically zero effort. It allows for a fucking torrent of good, new content to be made easily and since it has that Mario-polish on the controls, every level feels great to play

After it was announced the Vita was shutting down, and Sony wasn't doing a new handheld. I was wondering where all those developers would go. I assumed the PlayStation 4, but up to the release of the Switch, I was kinda joking on a podcast that it probably would be the platform for lewd games, since they had nowhere else to go... And here we are.
It's pretty clear cut why. Over the past 6-8 months, Sony has put the breaks on development with their arcane censorship practice, where developers who wants to make a Japanese PS4 game in Japanese for the Japanese audience, has to apply in English to an internal ratings board in California, effectively making the Switch the only Japanese console left on the market. Nintendo has simultaneously had a leadership change after Iwata died, who probably was the last bastion of old men who refused to change the Nintendo brand for profit.

Pair that with the fact that Retro allegedly had to "audition" to reclaim Prime 4, and it sounds to me like Nintendo wasn't happy with their work all these years, didn't trust them until proven wrong, and then stuck them on Prime 4 while still not caring for whatever their project originally was.
Basically, if they had a game worth showing, you'd have seen it before they were put back on the Prime series. Clearly you've never actually played Mario Maker for any real period of time. There are tons of interesting mechanics and interactions and more are still being discovered. There's also some super advanced things you can do with the editor, several people have youtube channels dedicated entirely to MM mechanics.
You have no idea what you're talking about brainlet. My favorite types of games are engineering games mainly on pc like KSP, From the Depths, Garry's Mod etc.. and I love Mario Maker.
On the surface the level editor doesn't seem that powerful or interesting but there are actually tons of interesting things you can do with it because of the way certain props interact with others and the rules that they follow.

Miyamoto ran Paper Mario and M&L into the ground. M&L is being "run into the ground" because Alpha Dream put that cap on themselves. They're based and said they only use OCs when they think it's necessary (basic enemies notwithstanding of course). Also they've mostly been doing remakes lately because they're uneasy about jumping to much more powerful hardware so soon I'm pretty sure there was an article about them staffing up too, ala GameFreak in their jump to 3D please god don't let the next M&L be 3D
