If it has a point, like a low self steem character or something like that, it makes sense. Redesigning a cute character as ugly just for hivemind points is stupid.

The average human is just that, average, so they feel like they have to take away the aesthetics of character design to insert and properly represent them.

Ugly characters can be fine, but there's an issue when you already have a character where people have impressions of that character being hot, then an ugly redesign just feels bad.

In which case, everyone except Cloud, Aeris, and Red XIII match up. Instead, they become Ex-SOLDIER, Aerith, and Red.
Cloud is very clearly deliberate, since he is the only character we actually see before their naming screen for the intro sequence. But the other two? Seems entirely fitting for me. Red alone is more of a name than Red XIII. (Why would he even want to be reminded that he's an experiment every time someone calls out to him?) And since Tifa is Tifa, Barret is Barret, and so on, why is she Aerith here?
