It happened between Zack and Sephiroth. Cloud's memories are fucked up at this point and he is self-inserting as Zack.

They won't change it as much as they will bloat the narrative.

But Cloud does have visions of Sephiroth in Midgar. Sephiroth is almost literally inside Cloud's head throughout the entirety of disc one.

I absolutely take this as an example of the writers forgetting the importance of not showing Sephiroth until way later in the game to increase the impact of his appearance; they're going to spoil him by adding in a superfluous flashback/hallucination, thus ruining the suspense and undercutting the idea that Sephiroth is a mythical warrior you only hear about in stories.

That doesn't work anymore, everyone knows who Sephiroth is.

Irrelevant. You have to present a story as if no one has ever heard it if it's going to retain its weight. This will almost certainly be the first time a lot of people experience ff7. Allowing others to influence your writing is terrible and shows a lack of creative vision. They're going to give Sephiroth the Darth Vader treatment by overexposing him as fanservice and making him more important than he originally was.
