better yet are there any good gamecube emulators on a phone?
D-O-L-P-H-I-N
me and 3 friends co opped the shit out of it offline when it came out
bit dated now though
i had fun playing exclusively offline as a kid
Yes. It's the greatest game ever made. I have a sealed copy of Episode I & II Plus in my safe with my PhD. It's pure kino.
whats the best way to hook a gamecube controller up to my computer? my logitech f310 is missing some buttons
why don't you just play the pc version? There are people playing online right now
You need either the official or mayflash gamecube adapter. After you get that it’s very simple to install the driver
youtu.be
Private servers exist and want to know a fun fact? This game was THE key to Gamecube piracy back in the day! The idea was to get PSO to connect to your PC instead of the official servers and have it stream the game to your cube.
I cant afford online gaming user. I wish I could.
Personally? No. This game is a lot like Diablo, but I prefer Diablo and Path of Exile alone. When you play Phantasy Star Online you can't even get all the items drops with the same Section ID, you need multiple people, and people that can't cast Shifta/Deband are so much more powerful with it than without, and Casts allow a group to clear out waves of tough enemies without breaking a sweat with their traps. The game is begging you to bring a party with every design decision, every time you hit the symbol chat button you are reminded it was originally sold with online play being the core feature.
This user is correct. PSO is literally the ultimate video game, EVEN offline. All I ask of the future of games is this gets a modern console port.
For teenagers and younger who haven't quite developed taste and responsibilities yet
I'd still recommend it over Soulsborne for a discerning adult, however.
Its got great offline split-screen action for up to four players!
Can someone tell the Principal his daughter is RIGHT FUCKING THERE
Is there anything like this game mechanics wise.
Closest thing i can think if is dark souls.
Feel like it even inspired dark souls
Dark Souls has some physics though. Also PSO combos actually require timing.
Pioneer 2 made me want to go to space and live there. I wish there was a huge city to explore.
You probably won't enjoy it enough to get through it offline
I wish they made more like the psp ones
Theres differences. I just can't get into dark souls for some reason. It bores me i feel like ive been here before in a different way. Id like something retro legend of mana or somethinf super modern like it. I have such a love for pso.
I played it for hours and i can think of being in highschool when it was around playing it with melee
Funny you mention that. There actually is a city in space but if you go there it’s actually not real and ya die instantly.
OP... it’s free
If you can find anything similar, let me know. But good luck. I've looked for over 3 years, going out and trying every recommendation people have listed as "like Phantasy Star". Nothing is close. Some games have *one* aspect, like similar loot tiers or plasma weapons, but no game has the whole package.
Like this user said PSO is like Diablo, Path of Exile, Torchlight, or any other ARPG except the combat isn't completely braindead and boring. Those games are too easy, and none of them are sci-fi. Path of Exile is straight up boring.
Yeah I played the shit out of it during 9th and 10th grade. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason everytime you fight Dark Falz it’s as epic as the last.
It's probably too dated to suck you in like it did when I was middle/high school. Single player has a lot of quests to keep you occupied if you like grinding though. The main draw for me was split screen on hard/very hard and grinding the hours away to find all the unique weapons. Fuck Boarderlands, this was the real weapon hoarding game.
We prob will go to space next time we come around.
To an extent, but you might as well just play the final version online which it is significantly more fun. It surprises me when I see people considering playing old console versions of PSO, like they actually don't know about private servers in this day and age.

Games don't die just because Sega is willing to let them.
The combat was just involved enough to actually require a certain amount of vigilance with every enemy, and this each individual encounter & victory was rewarding. And I feel as though there’s a very mobile difficulty threshold. It’s not like other games where when you’re not ready for a stage you’re not fucking ready. In PSO you can actually fucking do it if you try hard enough.
Were about the same age. Well i played on gc not to sure what you playes on.
I remember someone gave me a card. My brother said he had a way to transfer items and duplicate them so i let him do it and he destroyed the card and that dude was upset.
Soulsborne has unsatisfying, hardly any magic, telegraphing enemies, and shortcuts to winning like backstabbing, as far as combat goes.
Aesthetic is obviously personal preference, but there's no overlap and if you like PSO, you are by no means guaranteed to like Soulsborne art.
The enemies and bosses are also more interesting for me, personally.
Classes actually feel different and important.
The loot comes consistently and in good varieties---leveling up is satisfying.
Mags add another layer.
>I cant afford online gaming user.
This game was made to be played on dial up modems. I don't care if you use your phone internet, you can play PSO.
Yep
What pisses me off about borderlands its to easy
Lol i was horrible at feeding mags made someone do it
Yeah I did GameCube as well. I have two brothers close in age, and we each chose the Human Male of each class, so we had our bases covered. And yeah I remember duping shit as well, and the first time we discovered trading monster parts to Dr.Montague. Shit was great.
Monster Hunter
>pc version
where do I get it?
As another user said this game is the GOAT. I can't think of a reason why more games don't have photon weapons like this. Swords, greatswords, wands, staves, spears, sniper rifles, machine guns, rocket launchers, Wolverine claws, katanas, a fucking frying pan, double-bladed swords, boomerangs, dual wielding swords, scythes...and they're all lightsaber variations of those weapons (except the frying pan). Hell half the fun was spawning in a dungeon with someone new and seeing what weapon they brought with. Then the Gamecube/Xbox versions further changed the first tier of rare weapons visually. I remember when DB's Saber was just the starter saber, but would gradually change colors to look like a Brand, then go back to the normal one. In the later versions, it was completely unique, which only compelled me to seek out all the rare weapons all over again.
The quests are a big reason of why it works. It makes the gameplay arcade-y, where you play the same map over and over but with a different objective each time while also trying to improve your character and exercise your skills more flawlessly than the last run.
The maps are well designed both in look and in gameplay. Everything after the Forest is a dungeon crawl where the enemies get progressively more dangerous than the last batch---keeps you on your toes.
I sincerely hope we get a private server of PSO2 one day so that they can un-fuck all the shit sega has done to that game
psp was great. Phantasy Star, Monster hunter, Patapon, and Tactics Ogre were my go to games.
I hated how you could stun enemies in pso 2 and psu. They dropped the ball completely with the series.
If they made a pso wow clone id still be playing that game today. I like the aesthetics of ds sb its just it feels lesser than what pso was.
Pso was random and you'd see new stuff all the time.
Why can't anyone do melee combat like pso anymore.
I don't even remotely see the connection, it's closer to Diablo then Dark Souls.
you just had to try everything one and then figure out from there what would benefit you and what would work against you
I forget know what I needed to feed mine but it wasn't difficult as a Fonewm to figure out Monomates were bad food.
>is this game fun offline?
Online if you got a shit ton of free time to spare. Otherwise naw. That is the only way i could say shit would be fun offline. I know it sounds kind of odd of a prerequisite but trust me on this. Since if you can spare like 30 mins a day or less shit wont be as fun as it could be if you could put in like 2 hours a day or more.
Oh and if no one has mentioned it yet: this game’s music is FUCKING INSANE. I can’t think of a soundtrack comparable in style or strength of execution.
youtube.com
I will never forgive them.
I remember my dudes name. Vuvu and Vivi both girls. One dark blue hair other purple. I don't like playing as dudes in games. With my brother and his friends they all would kill each other couldn't do anything. That wad fun too no one got mad wed just do it. Im not sure if we dropped anything when you diel
>As another user said this game is the GOAT. I can't think of a reason why more games don't have photon weapons like this. Good list. The only other game like this for me was Knights of the Old Republic I & II. It's turn based and not action oriented so that may disappoint people looking for a PSO replacement.
But the aesthetic is only a tier away. The drive to improve your character is really well done in KOTORII with its stronger array of augmentation options, and the magic system is just as good as PSO.
Another game I loved was Fable.
For me, that's the closest game I've played in terms of gameplay to PSO.
there is an online pc version run by some fan nerds. you could still play it online alone but that is unless you are truly set on playing the gamecube version.
Music still plays in my head randomly to this day
There's no chance of this ever coming West. Ever. Sega has three options:
1) Release it in the West, but start from scratch (none of the episodes) and build their way up to where Japan is. If they do this, what's the point? Players will want the newest content, so they'll keep playing the Japanese client.
2) Somehow translate everything up to where it is now and release it all at once. Congrats, you've completely bombarded new players with a massive amount of content, systems, and mechanics and - in the process - lost their interest.
3) Do nothing and forget about the West.
Clearly they chose option 3.
>Why can't anyone do melee combat like pso anymore.
You mean staccato button tapping and automatic blocking with a somewhat clunky movement system?
It didn't even do combos particularly well, having the only alternate attack be just a straight-up charge attack.
There's something oddly soothing about fighting in PSO, but looking at it objectively, it's a mess you should only wish to see improvement upon.
Getting loot.
What i mean dark souls wise is combat where there is light quick hits and heavy ones. Just like dark souls.
Aesthetics no.
Grind is closer to Diablo yes
Enemies were ruthless in pso
Eh i don't like either of them im picky.
Make it quicker imo and more precise.
No input delay or nothing like that
You want more PSO and that's okay.
Fable is renaissance fantasy and KOTOR isn't shiny nor action.
user, I really hope you're still reading this thread, because you should just join tethealla. It's one of the only pservers that doesn't have boosted EXP rates and has been making slight balance adjustments to the game over time, improving upon it. It's 100% free, too
I still play it on my dreamcast personally but I also understand the time spent on it will never be used elsewhere and plan on moving to tethealla soon
years ago I found copies of it on amazon for $20 a piece and ordered 2 to give a friend one
shit was literally fucking shrink-wrapped and brand fucking new i couldn't fucking understand it
I really like the gunweebs/grognards that love projectile weapons even though they're worse, and the fact that there are multiple photon updated projectile weapons just to keep the cooler aesthetic. I feel like people in the future with light guns would get bored of it.
will my internet bill skyrocket tho? thats the real question. I only have 80 gigs a month.
I played over 300 hours offline. Some of it was with friends, but I still fire this up every now and then. If it weren't for Monster Hunter, it would probably be more often than just "every now and then."
There's something about Episode 2's maps that make 'em feel perfect to play during hot summer afternoons.
BTW, there's a PSU pserver that recently opened as well
XP rates are hindered until any global player reaches 60, which is when they'll be restored
it's to ensure there's no autists that boost up to high levels and leave the newbies joining in upcoming months in the dust, both socially and difficulty-wise
It's an ancient, ancient game. At best I'd say that you're using less than a few mb in thirty or so minutes - it was designed to be played off a fucking dreamcast's broadband adapter, for fuck's sake.
No voice chat, only text, and only four or so players in all instances, it won't eat jack shit. Maybe PSU would use only slightly more, but I'd say if you played on and off maybe at max 200mb a month if you put in a large sum of hours - maybe 200. It's not taxing.
If your lying I will fight you behind the local mcdonalds you little bitch
Video games don't use high data for internet play. That's the whole point of having gigs worth of information on both sides, so only tiny details of health, and positioning need to be transferred.
Trust me, because I have 3 years of IT under my belt
it literally cannot go anywhere higher than 200mb a month if you played like asmongold and wow, and you fucking won't so it's not a threat
it's like saying leaving a 60w lightbulb on for three minutes will cause a problem with your electric bill - they cost $17 to keep on literally every second of a year, PSO1 would be nothing on your data plan
installation's small as well
btw, if you 3 or so months from now see a lad in a purple short skirt with white skin named tabitha then u a baller ass niggu
hunewearl btw
cool thanks bros
Monster Hunter is as close as you will ever get.
Dark Souls like you mentioned is another one.
