It's not possible, I just had an east game where there was not a single move I could do to prevent being in 4th place at the end of the match. Didn't even deal in once so it wasn't about bad defense, often I can do both especially if theres only one in riichi or seemingly tenpai. Just the amount of quick tsumos and rons lucky fuckers can get. There was a South game I had recently where I only made one "mistake" and that was doing a riichi with a good wait early in the game, being unlucky that it lasted long enough for someone to riichi mid game and instantly dealing in their tile fucking me with a haneman and being tsumo'd every single hand until South 4 where someone finished with a 1k ron when I had a hand. I can tell you all kinds of stories of my bad luck this week, unbelievable shit that hasn't happened to me even when I played before this.

How do I find the magical sands of hell?

Generally, you want to be moving towards the middle.

Imagine you have an 1, 2 and have an edge wait on a 3. Now, let's say you draw a 4. You should discard the 1, and keep the 4 giving you a closed wait. Your wait hasn't changed, but your potential for improving your hand has, because now if you draw a 5, you can discard the 2, giving you an open wait on both 3 and 6.

But for your case, if you have a hand with a single 3 vs a single 4, in terms of pure tile efficiency I'd suspect 4 is better (but I'm guessing), and your hand has a better change of becoming a tanyao with the 4, but you are also keeping a more dangerous tile if it's something you might discard later.

Count the number of Riichi and the number of visible dora tiles. Compare them to the value of your hand. Less of the first, more of the second, and more of the third, in various combinations, should tell you whether or not to pursue tenpai.

Basically, if you've discarded a tile that you could be waiting on, then you get put into furiten and cannot win off of someone's discard while you are waiting for the tile that you have discarded. This includes a two way wait, like if you're going for all simples yet have a a wait to complete a chii on your 23 or 78 yet have only discarded a 1 or 9.

Furiten means you can't call ron on that tile.

If you have discarded a tile at any point you can't call ron if someone else discards that tile.
Similarly, if one of your opponents discards a tile you are waiting for, and you don't call ron, you'll be temporarily placed in furiten on that tile. If you are in riichi, it's not temporary. Even if you are in furiten, you can still win with a tsumo.

If you are in furiten, it probably means you've made some bad discards and went in circles building your hand.

You enter furiten if one of your winning tiles is in your discard, or you go into furiten until your next round if you chose to pass on winning of a ron

Furiten is a state that means you can't call ron and can only win off a self-draw. There are three kinds of it:

-Temporary furiten: when you're not in riichi, someone discards a tile that could complete your hand (even if it gives you no yaku so you can't take it), you're in furiten until your next draw.
-Regular furiten: when a tile in your discard pile (including ones other people have called, that's why the claimed tile is rotated sideways so you know who discarded it) could complete your hand, again even if it gives no yaku, you can't call ron. This form of furiten stays, but you can break out of it by changing your hand's wait.
-Permanent furiten: Same as temporary, but after you've called riichi. If you pass a winning discard while you're in riichi, you're in furiten for the rest of the round. There will never be a point where you're forced to do this though, since declaring riichi is a yaku itself.

bros... i've lost 30 games in a row now. i don't know what to do, i feel like i have decent tile efficiency for a noob and i always try for closed hands unless it's an obvious pon/kan of seat or round winds or dragons to go for some cheap points.

i just don't know how to improve, i'm getting 4th place in every match and getting fucking slammed in every game. playing into someone's big ass hand that brings me down to 300 points etc. i've been playing mahjong for like 7 months now and i feel like i've gotten consistently worse over time

It's probably because you are playing on east only. If you play a full hanchan, odds are someone is going to get a mangan+ and your 1300 hand is never gonna catch up. East only isn't long enough, and theres a good chance a decent hand will never develop, exacerbated by the fact that most people are trying to spam cheap hands.

It's the worst strategy. But you can still win with it by just forcing the game to end asap. But if anyone hits a decent hand. Your life is pretty much over playing like that. Even if you were leading.

You only say that because Yakuhai is the most common and easy Yaku to pull compared to something like ToiToi and Sanshoku Doujin. You'll think differently when you get better in the game for sure.

Start with 6sou and keep going from there with discarding safe tiles that are in the other discard piles. Kind of a difficult situation there, but as someone who's been there too often before, not utilizing proper tile efficiency got you there.

Alternatively, you could just get rid of the 9man and try to go for all simples even if it wasn't a guaranteed safe tile.

You say you don't know how to improve, but you've already identified one of your major issues: not knowing how to play defense correctly. Also, you're probably just stuck for now in the huge dip in the middle.

If you just insta pon dora early, unless you actually have an ideal hand (like a pair ready to be a yakuhai) you are going to be delaying how long it takes to get into tenpai. If you don't have any yaku, you are going to need to be changing your hand around until it can finally be worth a yaku. Smart opponents are going to catch on and not deal into your hand here too.

A dora is only worth 1 han, why even waste time developing your time for it, when you could instead get a riichi out faster, which is worth something like 1.5 han on average anyways.

I don't play east games but if I did I think it's better to get a mangan+ asap then play full defense to keep first place. Open tanyao can't secure first place.

It looks to me you're tunnel visioning because you don't know the other type of Yakus and combinations you can achieve within the game. If you don't study the methods of more difficult hands to get points and learn to play defensibly, more importantly, learn tile efficiency, you will never get better. If you had extensive Yaku knowledge then I would say it's just your luck, but it seems like you're only buttfucking yourself. Nothing anyone can do to help you out there.

what's the best method to improve tile efficiency and learn method to build more difficult hands? i'm not good at straight rote memorization and am more procedural in my learning (hands on, interactive). I have a decent working knowledge of at least all of the basic yaku and some intermediate ones but I could use any tips anyone's offering here

Think it's like 6s > 6d > 9c. 6s is only one that keeps tenpai and is completely safe so it's the best move. 6d is safe in either riichi. 9c is just hard to utilize at best and safe from a riichi.

Was pretty wrong on 9c though it's real shit. If you're ballsy even 5s was fairly safe too.

I'd say just learn how to make pinfu, and focus on trying to turn hands into it. Eventually you'll get a feel for it, and it'll git you gudder than going for toitoi at the earliest opportunity.

If you're going for a yaku that can be done with a open hand then calling a dora and opening your hand lets you complete it faster by being able to call other shit than keeping it closed and aiming for richi while value-wise you're only losing the the extra han the richi might give you if you're lucky.

And if smart opponents see you calling and avoid playing into your hand, then congratulations now they're also slowed down, because they have to work around tiles that seem dangerous to discard.

Just make sure you focus on not losing. 2nd isn't losing. 3rd isn't losing as bad as 4th.

Tile efficiency is important. Playing even cheap closed tanyao hits for 8k pretty often. Even more with conditions. But just not trying to build big hands that just aren't going to work is very important.

It's odd you say you've been playing for that long but still struggle even though procedural learning is your strong suit. But it just goes to show you need to be procedural and learn route memorization all at once. If that is your strong suit, the only advice I can give is to watch a bunch of Mahjong matches and look at the list of Yakus of why they're building the specific hand and how they won the round.

It's an accessibility thing, really, though having hags and cats does help on a memetic level.

Aim for making a yaku, or winning hand while not discarding tiles that can help the other players get closer to getting yaku and tiles that give bonus points. Also, learn how to feel changes in the flow and follow it.

this is probably a case where open tanyao is fine since you have dora + akadora and chance to pick up another akadora, so you're not going to have a completely cheap hand if you start calling
or you could hold on to the dragons and hope to draw another for the same reasons, or just wait it out for a decent chance at a mangan riichi

It suffices to win with tanyao + riichi, that is already quite a lot of points. Add another Pinfu if you can.

This is easily in the mangan range.

At best, you can go with dragon tiles. If not that, then pinfu. Also, don't let anyone tell you to get good. Skill is definitely involved but luck also plays a factor. The best advice I could give you when it comes to skill is try to not expose your hand often, look at the other players' discard so you don't get Ron'd, and be efficient with the tiles by going for the closest yaku.

You want to hold your dragons and seat wind if it's not your North you'd drop it. Drop dragons asap if they get dropped. If you drop both move into riichi tanyao or just open tanyao to utilize doras. Dragon Pon otherwise to grab doras fast.

Ditch Dragons by mid game if you don't draw any or you have completed cleaning up the tanyao. Most of this is just going to have to be built on waits. A clean tanyao is probably not happening with two 2 tiles and a 8. It's probably a dirty tanyao riichi or dragon pon hand.

And another thing about when to drop dragon tiles. There's 4 of every kind of tile. If 2 of the same tiles have been discarded, you should discard your tile too unless you're waiting for a duplicate to complete a hand.
