Forgot thread title. The question is, what is your favorite mid-game skill check boss fight.
tough choice, I think I'll go with pontiff even though his game isn't my favorite
For me, it's the Owl.
Memes aside, O&S are the weakest link here
>Suli is faster and more aggressive than anything you've fought in Dark Souls 3 up to this point, fair but punishing difficulty fight if you get too greedy
>Shadows require you to keep up the offense on all three equally or else you make the fight even harder on yourself
>Owl has thematic elements attached to him, making you more invested in the fight due to the stakes. While not incredibly challenging he does condition you with his own mikiri counter and lloyd's talisman
>O&S offer an interesting but otherwise plain fight with the gimmick being a hidden health bar
Don't forget Owl has the coolest moveset despite being a mirror opponent, has the coolest fucking dialogue on death, and the SICKEST theme.

Meh, poll says "mid-game skill check", Owl is easier than the bosses preceding him.
Owl is way farther than mid-game though. Theres only one area after him. The Sekiro equivalent to a mid-level boss would be Genichiro.
>Shadows of Yharnam
>Skill check
Owl >>> Pontiff > O&S >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mystery Niggas
>DaS2 boss conspicuously absent
Something about Owl’s disgusting thick braided hair made his character really cool
Funnily enough O&S still give me the most trouble out of these bosses. Pontiff and Shadows are easy for me and I beat them my first try. I found Owl to be a challenging fight, but fun. His second fight is way harder.
Shouldn't a skill check boss require a skill to beat? DaS1's is a good example but the other three are pretty shit, especially Pontiff, who you can just beat the shit out of uncontested.
DS2 complaints/quality aside, it doesn't really have a standout midgame boss like Ornstein and Smough. The multiple routes you can go for the four souls muddles what constitutes midgame, and the Ornstein+Smough equivalent you can tackle don't get to stand out since they share a room with Nashandra and they really aren't anything but a remix of O+S. The only bosses people really remember from DS2 are the final bosses of the DLCs.
I am doing the 4 most popular From games directed by Miyazaki.
You fight them rather early but it suits the theme
Playing the games sequentially spoils ds3. I struggled with every entry preceding it but managed to destroy most ds3 bosses. I beat pontiff first try while wasted, and I don't even consider myself very good.
>no dark souls 2 boss
>but shitiro
I really wish Pontiff got Owl treatment in the sense of having a secret endgame fight where he uses his true power.
That boss is optional.
MYSTERY NIGGAS
POPE NIGGAS
SHINOBI NIGGAS
KNIGHT NIGGAS
They're just a prelude to an area boss. Mechanically they're just a simplified bell gargoyles. I think mirror knight is the best example of a midgame check though it isn't a good example like the other games.
the first time you try and charge attack and the fucker mikiri counters its you just know the fight is pure kino
>strawpoll me/17970412
Aesthetically, Sullyvahn.
Gameplay, Owl.
Check But most people end up fighting them because its the natural progression path, and even if you avoid them you have to take on this lad first (pic related) which also fits the category. The thing about DS2 being so open in the beggining its that no boss really fits the role that OP states
(((Ornstein)))
>Ornstein and Smough
>skill based
It's a pure luckfest.
> >shitiro
Owl can be locked down in a corner
Pontiff can be parried and die
Mystery Niggas don't deserve to be on this list.
O&S is the only logical answer
Im surprised it wasnt Logarious or Guacamole
Martyr Logarius would be a better choice for bloodborne
Sequeero sounds better
An optional boss that you need to google to find is not a skill check.
Amelia is a better skill check.
Gotta say, the Owl was unironically one of the hardest bosses (third hardest I'd say) in NG++ no charm no bell, even more so than his prime self. No other boss outside of Isshin and DoH scales with difficulty like he does.
Just push him in a corner lmao
>you need to google to find
yikers
Isshin and demon of hatred were much harder with no charm+bell ng+6
He always gets out eventually
And here's the thing, the fight is very long, he becomes very tanky after ng with difficulty modifiers
Owl is entirely skill-based. You will get your shit pushed until you learn his every tell and every move. He is a very fair and satisfying boss to fight in both fights and the Father fight is probably the second best fight of the whole game after Isshin.
Except he doesn't. Its 100% consistant to keep him locked behind the open doors.
Its why speedrunners do it, because its consistent.
I have to go with the chained ogre. Been stuck on him for over a month now
>Amelia is a better skill check
In 4 consecutive runs through the game i dont think ive been killed by Amelia once, but ive seen her consistently regarded as a hard boss. Why is she so difficult?
Orsntein and Smough is all about positioning and playing with the pillars of the arena, if you can make Smalls follow you you can easily ravage him before Biggie gets to you, and vice versa, as long as the two arent close to each other you can dispose of them without much trouble
I beat him by staying in sprint the whole time and basically running in circles and then going in for a hit when he finished his move. That’s probably not the “proper” way to do it is it
Y-Yikers!!!
What you're doing is just dragging the fight when you should've been punishing his sweeps and deflecting the everliving shit out of his attacks.
In fact he has such openings you can flame vent his ass into them.
Honestly I'm just glad Owl is so close to O/S. That's a testament of its own.
>using prosthetics
Thats like summoning in souls, dont reply to me again
O&S is a gimmick, but memorable
Pontiff is overrated, never had any trouble with them
Mystery Niggas is just a shit fight
Owl wins this by default, even though Genichiro forced me to git gud more. You should know what you're doing by the time you make it to Owl.
I considered that but one he is optional and thus not applicable from consideration.
Should have Flamelurker as an option
shinobi owl is a joke, you can easily interrumpt most of his attacks, the owl father is the real deal
But seriously I want answers from the three contrarians that voted for Shadows of Yharnam.
beating owl 2 for the first time I was fucking sweating and panting, a feeling I have never felt even in dark souls so for me its owl hands fucking down, his moveset is incredible, it changes depending on your position, your imput, your state (healing, not healing, blocking ) and has mixups that vary dynamically while making all of his attacks incredibly clear, defined and easy to recognize thanks to his burly shape, long ponytail and trickster nature
he is the most advanced and dynamic boss ever made in fromsoft history and beating him in sheer design will be a massive challenge
