I think they made Sonic terrible on purpose. Think about it, nobody really gives a shit about Sonic anymore. When was the last time a Sonic game came out and the normiesphere was like "woah!"? 2006? Meanwhile Pokemon is loved worldwide, so that's an easy sell for a movie.
If Sonic looked normal, Sonic fans would look at it and watch it and probably hate it for being hollywood shit, and normies wouldn't even know it exists. We already know the general plot of the movie from leaks. It mostly centers around Sonic and his cop friend. Eggman's there, but the movie should have focused on his character instead if Paramount was interested in making this movie at least somewhat decent.
To put that in context, Ready Player One has a 72% on RT. Granted, I kind of liked Ready Player One so I dont know where that would put me in terms of whether or not I would like Detective Pikachu.
