Really like PKMN, obviously, grew up playing stuff like Digimon World, Monster Rancher (both kusoge but still good for a hoot), DQ-Monsters, SMT etc etc
anything else obscure that I might like that's similar? Curious if you guys know of any hidden gems. Thanks in advance.

i remember thinking this game sucked when I was a kid lol

Medabots if you're fine with changing out "mons" for "bots"
Angel Rodriguez
>We will never get this, terry's wonderland and DQMJ3 ever Atleast port them to switch or something.
pic related, it's a total pokemon rip-off but with short 2d sidescrolling races (very classic sonic feeling) instead of battles. it's not the best thing ever but it makes for a nice change of pace and there's breeding and shinies.
quiet kid gets bullied into going into a dark cave >earthquake cause the cave to collapse, kid falls into darkness >kid wakes up in a strange world >attacked by strange man creatures >meet a local of the world and told about a prophecy involving a stranger from another world, and how during a time of darkness they'll appear to save the world >people start to love and respect you as the hero of the prophecy >kid just wants to go home >geysers of shadow begin to appear across the world >have to destroy them in order to go home >the prophecy was actually a warning >the reason the shadow geysers are appearing is because you came to that world >when you came to the world it weakened the seal on an ancient evil who was trapped between dimensions long ago >the shadow geysers are actually his power leaking forth into the world, and the world itself fighting against him >by destroying the shadow geysers you're effectively unlocking the rest of what imprisons him >the people of the world begin to realize this begin to turn against you >you go from being the most loved person in the world to being even more hated then the villain
Digimon World is simultaneously a very core rpg experience and a means of parting stupid children of their money. all around, good are pee gee me like

This game is so sick, shame it didn't have more of an audience. Was the first game I ever rented.

im not saying I dislike the first one, but there's no way a child is finishing that game or making progress past the first couple of hours

Bushi Seiryuuden, but it's JP only. Game Freak made it themselves.

I unapologetically and unironically loved DQ Monsters: Joker and its sequel more than any Pokemon game I have ever played (and I've played since GSC). I wish to heaven it was more popular but for some reason it never caught on.
>but for some reason it never caught on. It's purely brand recognition. Dragon Quest is nowhere near as popular outside of Japan as it is inside, and pokemon was already cemented as the one monster catching game to most people by the time Joker was released.
Liam Jackson
>I wish to heaven it was more popular but for some reason it never caught on. I hate that we got the Joker 2 vanilla instead of Professional, but I can't blame them; it was only made because of a nasty bug, and it was a tragic case of bad timing.
This was also a digimon rip off as it included a "battling tamagotchi" I'll only talk of those which I played and it's completely possible that you don't know about : >Invizimals 1 for the PSP is a Spanish developed AR mon game, mals in this case, with an interesting concept "what if there really were monsters under your bed?" and unique creature designs. You must look around your house with your PSP camera to trigger encounters and hunt Invizimals with a different method for each species, then you can fight with them in 1v1 AR battles. The mechanics are simple but fun and it's not a game you can play in a single sitting since certain mons appear at specific times of the day. >Shaman King "legacy of the spirits": Sprinting Wolf and Soaring Hawk for GBA, a Shonen version of demikids but very much it's own thing since it's based on an stablished manga. >Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters, also for GBA, if you like gambling, GBA 3D graphics and strategy RPGs this game is for you. >Digimon Digital Monsters ver.S (Sega Saturn) or Wonder Swan. Both are upgraded versions of the original V-pet line with the addition of being able to buy and raise multiple monsters at the same time and CPU battles but both have pros and cons: the former is full colored with original artwork by akiyoshi hongo but only has Japanese text and the latter is monochrome pixel art renditions of official art but has an English translation (pic related). >Digimon Anode/Cathode V-dramon special version are the only story based wonder swan color digimon games with English translation, if you're interested in Survive you might as well give it a try. >Both Duel Masters by Atari/Wizards/Hasbro for GBA are in essence a Pokemon TCG GB spiritual successor since DM is just a MTG spin off with creature evolution and Weeb friendly aesthetic. By no means these are better than the real thing because just with the game only human character designs you can easily be put off.
he might have at one point, but its all worn out. I think i got him around 98-2004? i wanna say they were like a dollar store brand of pokemon, but i cant find ANY information ANYWHERE about them if they existed. Scrolled through pages and pages of wikis and ebay/amazon. looked by color by size by monster, nothin
Lucas Ramirez
so Magi Nation was tight as hell and came with DOPE trading cards i really wanted to collect more of them and they have like a toy line or something but never found any
Jackson Scott
I'm having the same problems. I'd try asking on /tg/ or even /r/whatisthisthing. Either might work
I meant wings instead of eimgs, sorry I fucked up the typing.
Jeremiah Murphy
It doesn't necessarily have one, but is referred to as the "Montner" (monster + partner). The remake of DWM2 has a unique feature where you can design your own starting monster from a number of parts; you're able to mix and match them however you want, as well as choose their color, and even its gender. >youtube.com/watch?v=8Y-1WHQterE This video shows a number of the options you have, as well as what each matching set of parts looks like when assembled.
Adrian Smith
Nevertheless, it looks cool Thanks a lot man.

>the trainer fights too What other monster catching games do this?

>turn based billiards gameplay >hard as balls later on >great exploration with 0 hand holding >post-apocalyptic island setting >run-of-the-mill story >meh music

Unfortunetly you cant play the second season of the game it self was released during time world was released but never brought to the west the update 1.3.0 Basicaly is like playing a soudo sequel.
Jacob Clark
That's motherfucking Meta Knight?!
Aaron Wilson
It really sucks that SMT/Persona,Digimon, and Yokai Watch are the only other monster collection-esque games that are relevant aside from Pokemon.
Brandon Clark
I'm still pissed how they treated MHS on the west Good thing we have CFW so we can at least play the Japanese version of the game if we wanna experience the updates
Ian Wilson
Try taking a picture of it from the front or just closer in general. Image searching with less background + more of the subject might help
Julian Anderson
Touhou mon. Every iteration is a pretty good monster collecting game with new type chart + monster design that is fan made but with quality. Play it on emulator or hacked 3DS
Dominic Foster
>I wonder if any more will be made No and yes, depending oh how granular you're getting. No, because the Joker subseries of the Monsters spinoff specifically ends at 3 Professional, and yes because a Dragon Quest Monsters game with Erik and Mia as the protagonists was announced some time ago as part of the spinoff's 20th anniversary. Hopefully that one gets localized, Joker 3's gameplay improvements would've made it the best monster collecting JRPG ever in my book if it weren't for the dogshit monster roster.
Liam Morris
God I wish.

There's an old GBC game called Magi Nation that you might enjoy. It's kinda like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh had a retarded baby. The biggest problem with the game is the massive difficulty spike that hits around the 2nd or 3rd dungeon. I can't remember where, I just remember a LOT of grinding to beat the boss of the dungeon.
> People remember Magi-Nation I don't know what to say, I had a net handle based on that game for much of my life growing up, loved it a lot, and I'm glad someone else remembers it still. Never tried the card game, though.
Also, if you have a phone and a buck, give EvoCreo a try. It shows some good potential.
what a coincidence. i was itching to play a monster rpg last night but most of the games posted here suck. Posting some upcoming monster collecting rpgs i found on steam
Magi Nation fucked my fucking dick off, such a good game
Jacob Jackson
I mentioned Siralim already, but it's seriously good if you can get past the shitty visuals. Tons of really strong and imaginative combinations without allowing the player to break the game. It expects you to create your own strategies as you play since the game gets pretty difficult.
Landon Stewart
Seeing all these and noticing all the Pokemon-like attributes from the 1v1 battles to egg hatching and still using random encounters instead of overworld encounters leads me to believe these Indie developers are still stuck with rose-tinted Pokemon lenses and need to play other monster collectors to get a better perspective. As much as I loved Pokemon as a kid, it's filled to the brim with all kinds of flaws that just don't exist in other monster collectors and these indie devs just end up making the same mistakes due to know nothing except Pokemon. Maybe I should just get into game design myself so I can try my hand at designing a monster collector and see if it's harder than I think. At least these Siralim games appear to be taking more of a GBC Dragon Quest Monsters 1 approach.
Jeremiah Moore
Siralim is more like DQM
Dominic Price
It sounds really interesting mechanically, but I'm not a big fan of standard fantasy themes in these kinds of games. I actually quite like the modern day settings many popular monster games have, and I think Tolkien/D&D-ish fantasy is worn out.
Still, the way your guys speak of the game make me curious, and I may go ahead and pick it up in due time. Pic unrelated.
>see if it's harder than I think It most likely is.
Blake Russell
I liked talefang.
>tfw it will never be fully translated
Anthony Jackson
Perfectly balanced interactions between 100+ monsters each with their own stats and abilities is obviously very difficult. They could probably make it easier on themselves by having every move be unique to each evolution branch, but needing to balance a single move between at least a dozen evolution lines with drastically different stats and move synergies is intimidating.
Robert Parker
I don't doubt it takes alot of work to make a monster collector but when a big budget company like Game Freak is whining that Switch development is hard while smaller companies on smaller budgets are transitioning to Switch hardware just fine, one has to wonder...
Jeremiah Clark
Gamefreak have always struggled with the programming/tech side, but they usually make pretty balanced games outside gen 1.
Levi Johnson
>that /vp/ mod who can't handle other monster catching games on his precious pokemon board Sasuga
Matthew Gomez
I'd argue that a good amount of that balancing is because they never allow the full monster count to be obtainable in a single game unlike with DQ and YKW. As a result, there are far fewer factors to balance out because your options are so limited. DQ makes it harder to get the good stuff with convoluted fusion trees to get the strong stuff and YKW has extremely obtuse methods for getting high ranks in addition to super slow level growth on high rank monsters despite the full monster count for both series being obtainable
