Undertale was an underwhelming experience for me. I played the demo in 2013 and I loved it. It reminded me of more subdued rpgmaker games like yume nikki or off. The wird ending shit gave the demo as a whole a lot more depth and the spare system and the bullet hell dodge mechanic seemed like a very fresh twist on an otherwise boring mechanic (turn based fighting).

I finished undertale the night it was released and I was just disappointed. I expected a quiet game that spoke for itself, and instead I got an over the top tumblr humour experience that never leaves you alone, horrible pacing, underused mechanics, an unnecessarily complex story, and no replayability (yes, yes, I know there's a holocaust run you can do. Nothing about that makes the game more fun to play through for a second time, though. The cutscenes drag on and on and are unskippable, and not at all funny to watch for the second time. That alone makes replaying it an absolute drag).

INTERESTING", which is typed exactly like entry number 17, the only confirmed dialogue of Gaster's.

In Japanese, most of the text is in pure kana. A difference is in Chara and Gaster's dialogue who use extensive kanji. Both the twitter and Deltarune's opening use these kinds of kanji. (Incidentally, the "I" pronoun used by the narrator at the start of Deltarune is "wareware", which is incredibly formal and archaic. Fitting for a doctor to be polite.)

I honestly don't understand the appeal of Undertale. The writing and humor is so painfully forced and tumblr-y (or whatever fandom this thing originated from). It somehow manages to be more obnoxious than a Borderlands game. I didn't laugh once during my entire playthrough of it, but I rolled my eyes countless times.

It will also age terribly because of alll the dated pop culture references. Like, there's one part of the game where that scientist interrupts you with messages/calls every few steps you take, which is obviously parodying Facebook message updates. Not only does this show a child's understanding of how comedy works, but that segment is excruciating to play through, because you get interrupted every few steps.

And the mechanics are completely disconnected from the narrative. In good RPGs, non-violent conflict resolution is handled through dedicated mechanics, such as stealth and speech. Undertale doesn't contextualize any of its mechanics and just has this completely abstract bullet hell mini game. How does that even make sense?

The twist is supposed to be that monters are actually peaceful and just afraid of you, but then why do they immediately try to murder you? Why don't they approach you peacefully first and see if they can reason with you? Or at least run away?

Why is there a village of monsters who don't attack you? Again, this village has monsters who interact with you peacefully, so why can't the other monsters do that?

Hollow Knight is genuinely the only exception I can think of and I've actually wondered about why it got so successful a lot.

I don't care how incredible this game is, this awful soundtrack nearly ruins it. I wondered if I was actually going to rate this as low as I did, but I decided that the fact this cliched, unoriginal, and shittily produced soundtrack went to one of the most well written and touching video games of all time is just offensive. And unlike some other dicks on this page I'm judging it as a SOUNDTRACK and not a standalone album.

Really, the thing people like about this soundtrack is the melodies. All five of them. Seriously, if you know what you're looking for you'll find leitmotif's strewn fucking everywhere, usually in ways that hijack whatever chord progression they're placed on. The culminating moment of the true pacifist run is accompanied by a track with something like four separate leitmotifs in sequence, and they all sound forced. Instrumentally, it sounds like the most difficult track in any DDR game, i.e power chords and chiptune synths. The fact that Toby Fox thought that ugly bullshit would work on the literal final moment of the game, the most emotionally affecting sequence I've ever experienced in an interactive piece, is just baffling. There are several moments that should be impactful, but I can FEEL that cheap production weighing it down, and that is inexcusable.

Yeah the melodies are occasionally catchy and pretty, but I can do that too. I've done it many times. The ability to write nice melodies is not unique to Toby Fox. The moral of the story is to hire a fucking competent composer next time.

Undertale is on like four consoles and is by far the most popular game of it's generation in terms of critical and fan passion. It's an indie game with more of a cultural stamp than some AAA games, it's no wonder that the game's crowning acheivement would get the most views.

Deltarune is the game Toby wanted to make when he was making Undertale and is using the Gaster mystery to bridge the two.

The game was alright, definitely felt like it was made with someone younger than me in mind and that's okay. I think the actual gameplay segments could have been a lot better with some more polish but it was a neat idea. I like Muffet and some of the soundtrack so overall I think I'm glad I played it.
