The entire format of the book adds to the suspense. Being written in journal passages gives you a unique vantage point on the narrative. Dracula is on a kiling spree basically and when you see "Arthur xxxx"'s journal passage it tells you that he does not die in what he's about to say or he obviously wouldnt be able to write it. You never know when the last time you'll be hearing from a character is. Also i agree the first part is amazing. It's hard to top. It hits a high point not that soon after when the story on the ship that dracula boarded unfolds, with him killing everyone one by one and the ship washing up on shore with the captain tied to the wheel by his bloodied crucifix The whole part when Helsing has to convince Arthor and Seward to let him murder Lucy's corpse is good too. Realizing her body is gone etc. You are reading their thoughts and impressions from their head, not "he did this and then he did that!". The psychological element is very engaging.

but yeah my favorite passage is when Harker describes Dracula crawling on the building.

The nerd has some good info here if you are interested in the movies at all. I think the novel is probably a better experience than any of them. Pick it back up it's not long. After like 10 pages something intriguing always happens that makes you end up reading for like 45 mins when you were hesitating 5 mins. I do have a boner for this book I will admit it. But its out of merit. A true masterpiece and story that taps into the zeitgeist of the time.
