Unpopular opinion: The term "Mary Sue" is a dumb sexist term.
It's not that the concept behind is necessarily sexist (ie. the idea that a character has unjustified yet exceptional abilities), but female characters are more often labeled a "Mary Sue" whereas male characters are given a free pass, despite male characters often being just as much of a "Mary Sue" than female characters.

You don't understand what a Mary Sue is.
For starters she's not the self-insert.
She also isn't making the right choices all the time and gets into all sorts of trouble and people around her die because of her or suffer in other ways.
She isn't all that powerful and most mages are probably her equal in combat. It's why she's on the run.
She's good in an otherwise morally gray world, and she's a unique individual with a special bloodline that people want to use some in less magical ways then others. She's not a the all-perfect self insert for the author to preach his or her world view and praise her greatness.
