FF7 remake Battle system analysis

Firstly almost nothing changed since the 2015 trailer, just the UI is now way more optimized which pretty much proves that CC2 leaving didn't seriously impact the contents of the game.

There's now a shortcut menu exactly like Kingdom Hearts that let's you assign special abilities (such as limits), items and likely magic as well to the 4 face buttons. What's interesting here is we can see Tifa and Barret are displayed on this menu too; assigned to L2 and R2 respectively.

Cloud appears to block a big attack from a mech enemy, yet there doesn't seem to be any indication as to how they're doing that. If square and triangle are regular attacks and circle is the menu, that only leaves X as another dedicated block button. This would mean there is no jump button in the game, which isn't the end of the world, but it'd be strange in an action rpg.

We see some ledge hanging as well, briefly. Whether this is a scripted event like the ones in XV or its more organic like KH3 is yet to be seen.

One major concern was the complete lack of hitstun from regular attacks (which you can observe when Cloud performs a full combo on a small enemy in the footage and they don't flinch or react at all to his attacks). This is an issue in an action oriented game as your attacks won't have any weight and it'll feel like you're swinging a small stick rather than a giant metal Greatsword the size of a small human.

It also seems that the Materia command was completely removed from the UI but you can still see material skills like braver in the shortcut menu along with healing items etc, plus you can also see the materia are now visible on the buster sword, i mean the actual materia spheres are installed on it and are visible which i think is cool as hell .

All in all the game looks very similar to PSX 2015 but vastly improved, very promising trailer.

How do actual FF7 fans feel about the combat system change? Seems like a kick in the balls to wait 20 years for a remake only to have it be radically changed.

It's that you just need to make the action RPG combat GOOD. I think the last time I enjoyed action RPG combat from Square was Kingdom Hearts 2. It was fun, fluid, and difficult at times and Square has yet to replicate that feeling.

As long as they build on the foundation that FFXV built im ok with it. The system has a lot of potential if they added some much needed complexity.

The ones asshurt about the turn based combat can go neck themselves. The original will always be there for you, but it won't let you manfight enemies and bosses in action mode nor let you go around places that aren't fucking pre-rendered backgrounds.

people keep saying this, but there's really no evidence of it. pokemon is still huge worldwide, dragon quest is still huge in japan, persona just hit the mainstream. smt, kiseki and digimon story are still going strong. studios like compile heart, nippon ichi and gust have built a comfortable niche for themselves with smaller-scale turn-based jrpgs.

It's a remake, not a remaster. I think it's okay. Super-realistic graphics would just look ridiculous paired with turn-bssed combat.

my guess is that x is jump, but honestly, the game doesnt need it if there is a solid system for environmental interactions. FF XV is an example of terrible, slow and pointless interactions. Having seen cloud slide through small spaces and hang from bars im a little concerned

I don't actually care that it's not turn based. They can update the combat system as long as they keep the spirit of what made it good. So if the action combat means they are sacrificing having direct party control, and designing the encounters as such... Absolutely fucking awful. If they were gonna completely throw out the gameplay of the original, they should've put in more effort to not make the ARPG gameplay completely flat. It doesn't seem to have any of the fun movement options or gameplay mechanics of faster hack-n-slash games, but the combat also doesn't have the sense of weight that makes slower ARPGs like Soulsborne games satisfying to play. It just looks like middle-of-the-road tripe made to satisfy the masses. I'm just not impressed, neither as a fan of turn-based games or action games.

Yeah it does. That base system is fine. But Square has a habit of putting too much shine on it instead of adding actual control to the system.

FFXV relies too much on the warping and flurries of attacks. Attacks just happen. Same with KH3. You press the same button and Sora just goes nuts, and context sensitive button prompts allow for even more nonsensical moves to just occur.

If they focused more on simple attack patterns and the ability to switch to more unique moves based on what you had equipped, I think it would work way better.

The attack that enemy is using is called 'Shotgun', but...what about it makes it a shotgun? The enemy can't run out of shotgun shells, nor does this attack have any of the properties of a shotgun, heck, it doesn't even take into account range. It functions exactly like a physical attack.

Contrast that with another turn-based RPG that was released in the same year as FF7, Fallout. In that game, shotguns actually function like you would expect. They use up ammo, have to be reloaded if they do run out of ammo, and they are most effective at close range and become very inaccurate at greater distances.

Besides distance, Fallout's combat also takes into account things like friendly fire and the level of illumination: fighting at night or in a cave makes you less accurate. And the combat actually takes place in the same area you explore in and utilizes your surroundings, whereas FF7 has invisible random encounters that basically teleport you to a separate dimension for the combat encounter.

Fallout has voice acting, whereas in FF7 characters don't even grunt when they take damage. It's dead silent. In Fallout armor changes your appearance, whereas it doesn't in FF7. In Fallout you bend down and loot the corpses of your enemies after combat, in FF7 they evaporate in thin air and you magically receive gold from them.

Having played both of these games for the first time only recently, I found Fallout immersive and engrossing in a way that FF7, despite its ostensibly higher production values, wasn't. And I only now realized why.

Modern jrpgs still seem to be designed in the way that FF7 is, being largely abstract, and I'm not sure this is such a good thing. FF7 remake will probably remain similarly abstract, which will be all the more jarring with those high-fidelity detailed graphics

basically 7r and kh3 are fully baked games so while all the cutscenes are fine tuned to be exactly what the dev wants it to look like for everyone, the gameplay envs and visuals aren't to the same level since most focus goes to cutscenes

while xv is using a dynamic real tine lighting that changes time of day, weather and atmosphere level depending where you are, and cutscenes are real time using that dynamic environment so there is a consistency between the cutscene visual and game visual, so for example if noct gets dirty and its raining he'll be wet and dirty in the cutscene which also affects outfits too, so it lets the devs use the game tech itself to have different conditions for different players

As a recent fan (30y.o. boomer who never had an interest in the series but finally played FF7 last year) I don't really care. The original game IS the ultimate FF7. I feel like people who hinge their hopes on dreams on remakes are the kind of people who will never be satisfied and are just trying to relive their childhood without having to look at "ugly" polygon graphics, instead of actually wanting to play the game again.

The original holds up fine, and if I wanted to play it again, I would. This "remake" seems more like a "reimagining", or even just a supplementation of the original. Given all the changes to the gameplay and battle system, it's demonstrably not the same game, and if story similarity is enough to call something a remake, then there are litereral dozens of FF7 remakes out there already. It's a pretty common plot in JRPGs and anime, once you reduce it to the core elements.

If you just try to attack over and over normally, you'll get murdered by Rufus and the doggo while your attacks do jack shit to him due to being cut in half by the Barrier spell. The person making the webm clearly killed the doggo first, AND waited for Barrier to fall off, before starting to record.
