It was mostly the detailed=better mentality, compare the box art of the first zelda game for a perfect example that also doesn't look like shit.

There is another explaination, I'm not sure where I heard the 'crappy tv' bit came from but in another video I found they actually either weren't going official art (of the American or Japanese variety) or had zero mandate of making them look like it, or possibly both, had a series of bullet points (which presumably include a vague character look) and told them to go to town.

Um. No. The kids' cartoons of the 70s and 80s were by and large severely out of touch with kids. The shit you know to have been successful? Yeah, there was a veritable SEA of animated teleivison for children back then. The successful stuff was the rare exception, not the rule.

For licenses like these game cartoons, the rights were usually purchased for a relative pittance compared to what'd it take to get most of them now, and brand integrity was rarely taken as seriously back then for big developers.

This, those cartoons were never made because the producers were fans, they were to make money off the name brand. I can't stand the DiC Double Dragon cartoon along with most of their other shit. How the fuck did they manage to make a Darkstalkers cartoon of all things? At least Mario, Sonic and even Double Dragon made sense. The last game any kid played at the time was Darkstalkers, and no teenager who liked the game trusted DiC of all companies to do it justice.

Only the DKC cartoon came off as entertaining and engaging.
