It's refinement from Dark Souls. Almost everything about it is an upgrade, except for the world design, which makes up for it with great individual level design.

Its length is one of its greatest assets. Bloodborne is 10 times longer and suffers from a drop in quality because of it. Journey is great all the way through.

Difficulty creates a barrier of entry for some people. I think a lot of people rate the game highly though, but it just isn't as accessible so it'll never be as popular.

The lore is retconned and never builds upon DaS1's world in any meaningful way.

Kind of, but not too much. Amelia and BSB are both >60%. While this might be a bit lower than normal, it's still pretty high and isn't a drastic drop off.

Souls spinoff that was exclusive to the PS4, the virtue of that alone greatly reduced potential exposure. After playing it myself I don't see that it merits much discussion, though perhaps the dungeons are neat, I didn't get quite that far as I was fatigued with the Souls concept. Never really found the weapons particularly interesting but I only played with a few of them. I played in two segments and the first time I didn't get very far, after picking it up again I found the environments weren't particularly readable and dropped it. I like the setting, the designs, the mechanics are fine, but it never struck me as groundbreaking.

When I dropped it the first time I only thought that it was a shitty souls clone.
