Looking through Wikipedia's list of 1999 releases, the only games that could specifically be considered 'great rivals' to Smash franchises are:
>Final Fantasy (Zelda, sorta? I guess it was more FF7 vs. OoT than FF vs. Zelda, and it was FF8 that came out in 1999, so probably not this one).
>Crash Team Racing (Mario/Mario Kart rival)
>KoF '98 home console/Garou:Mark of the Wolves (Capcom/Street Fighter rival)
>Soulcalibur (arguably Street Fighter rival, I guess? Virtua Fighter is also technically represented in Smash)

CTR remake is coming to Switch, but I don't see any Crash ports coming, especially with N. Sane Trilogy already being on Switch. I also really doubt a new SC is coming to Switch. I guess SNK/KOF fits, Sonic fits and FF possibly fits - I feel like Sonic's probably the most closely connected to 1999, though, since it was the begging of the rebooted 'Modern' era. If he meant Sonic, then the answer is probably Eggman since 1999 was before Shadow's debut. Digimon also totally fits and I'm guessing this was what OP was going for - I guess Agumon, then? I haven't kept up with Digimon since the early 2000's - I remember Patamon was on a lot of stuff. Is he still popular?
