Not really, there's no wild encounters and little to no exploration, to catch wild pokémon you gotta leave bait at certain locations and check on it later, the game is much more story-focused than the mainline games. Most of the Pokémon you're gonna catch are predetermined "Shadow Pokémon" you have to "snag" from other trainers, then you have to "purify" them to start training them. Also the entire game is based around 2 v 2 battles. There's also a number of virtual reality battle CDs you can collect, each battle is basically a puzzle-fight that teaches you a 2 v 2 tactic or something. Like "Defeat the opponents in X amount of turns" and you're using Plusle and Minun with Helping Hand, things like that.
