The crow literally utters the words "give me". It's totally feasible that some autist with a lot of free time would experiment. Since they can't give the crow an item through dialogue, they would drop the item next to the crow. Nothing happens of course but someone that is even more autistic and curious would leave the item there to check on it later after they progressed through the game. When they come back voila

The crow says no if you give it the wrong item

If you drop something, fuck off and do some other stuff including resting at a bonfire, then come back, is the item there? Because that seems a more likely thing to find by accident, the save/reload would just be a timesaver.

Also this, all you need to do is go through a loading screen

Crow trading originates from DeS where the NPC is in a much clearer location, people who had played DeS and saw the nest knew what was up.
