No, open up immediately. Actually hope that they discard your winds immediately to scare them off. If you have 3 open calls on winds, everyone will play a little more defensively. They probably won't discard west winds anymore, but that's just ruining their hands. All honors is still a yakuman anyway. Or you simply go for a half flush with the sou.

9p is better to discard. You just have too many pairs and need to throw some. Keeping 8p and 9p may lead your wining hand is 7p only.

From efficiency standpoint, 9p. Depending on the situation it might be reasonable to leave 9p pair because they're safer to discard if someone goes riichi. Chiitoitsu could also be an option, but it depends on many factors.

I had two 4th place games yesterday. One I never got closer than 2shanten before somebody else won and just got killed by tsumo points. The other I dealed into a haneman after a cat chased my riichi with a single wait.

Then the next game I was in tenpai before t6 every single game a buried a poor chink into the negatives with 2baimans and a mangan in a row. It's just how it goes.

Chess is 100% skill, but that's why it can be boring to most people.
This game is i'd say 40% skill and 60% luck. So people with skill will beat people with less skill over a large amount of games.

There is skill but also luck. Skill is the kind of thing that is evident over dozens of rounds/games. The most skilled mahjong players in the world only win about 25-30% of the time. Sometimes less if they are defensively oriented.

There is no depth in the ranking system of Majsoul, so I'd rather enjoy the plain fun of a game.

If there was something grindable like gacha coins or stuff like that okay, but the dust system is shit and that's just to get a character out of 8.

A hand that can win is good enough 90% of the time. Even with 0 doras and 0 yakus, if you can riichi and the wait is good (multiple tiles), do it.

Of course you can be forced to make tough choices between yakus when you're making an open hand, like, should you go for all triples or half flush? But you shouldn't delay closed hands too much for too much yaku, riichi + tsumo + possible uradoras does a fine job already

In most cases you should riichi that immediately. You're twice more likely to draw your winning tile than a 6 sou for tanyao, and it's mangan no matter what, haneman with ippatsu or any uradora.

Why riichi what's at least a mangan? Go for honitsu even if you have to call, but without going kan, this should work

Kan is all about risk assessment, a concealed pon or concealed kan that isn't called can be used as part of a pair and sequence as well to generally just make your hand meld better towards tenpai; a kan of honors is typically safer to just call, but you have to remember you're pretty much just upping the risk of the game for everyone.

When considering if you should kan, just ask if it has any affect on reaching tenpai, and if you're close enough that even if it only benefits someone else you can still reasonably win soon. Or just kannya

Otherwise, for teaching people in person I usually explain the game slow, almost everyone finds it overwhelming but understands it after a match or two, I usually do the first couple of rounds without them having to have any yaku, but explaining what criteria my hands meet or I was hoping to meet after the end of each game.

Having taught my entire immediate family and several friends how to play now, the best way to teach them is with a real mahjong set. Be absolutely certain to drill into them that having four groups and a pair is not enough to win. Be totally sure that they understand they need a yaku to win.

Play a couple games with them without the honor or character tiles, with the only yaku being riichi and tanyao. Then add the honor tiles and the yakuhai+chanta yaku. Then add the character tiles and give them the yaku sheet with an emphasis on only focusing on the 1 and 2 han yaku for now.

You're supposed to get triplets or sequences, that's the first condition, well and a pair. Another is one to get a Yaku.

Now, these two Yaku, for example, getting them means not satisyfing the first condition of winning a round - getting triplets or sequences + pair. So how does exactly one win with it? It's a Yaku, but that's one of the two conditions to win.

Riichi Rate is way too low, win rate 16% is beginner tier, way too many calls, that's why you usually score low enough to be cucked by big dick hands.

Don't look at the yakuman hands when learning. Even though nine gates satisfies your conditions, it's just so rare you don't really need to spend time remembering it til later.
When you're more experienced you'll be able to look at your hand at the start and say 'hm, i could go for kokushi here' and then fail and do nothing because it's rare as fuck.
