Dragon Quest released in 1986. Even that isn't the progenitor since shit like Hydlide and Dragon Quest came out after Ultima and Wizardry. Ultima III is the progenitor of the JRPG genre and its story tropes, since no JRPG has ever had a story on the level of Ultima IV, V, VI, or VII.

Megaten is much more urban mysticism, with real life religious references and a heavy inspiration from Devilman. There is no fantasy world being unravelled with scifi behind the curtains, nor is there a God that is integrated into said scifi reality.
