I didn’t grow up with them but after playing them now I’d say the sonic adventure games have the same appeal as a shitty Saturday morning cartoon with bad animation, voice acting, and plot that you still watched every weekend religiously.
I would’ve for sure look past the jankiness as a kid and I find it kind of charming as an adult. Like watching and old episode of Captain Planet.

Sonic/Shadow stages are pure kino, and nothing will change that.

Knuckles/Rouge stages would've been better if the emerald radar didn't fuck you in the ass, randomizing the emeralds order to get them doesn't help either. There's nothing more frustrating than standing right next to a shard and the radar not picking it up.

Tails/Eggman stages are alright, not utter shit, but not really fun to play either. It's just gamma's gameplay but slowed down to a crawl.

Rest of the game is kino though, the dumb serious story, graphics, music, the shitty english dub, all of it is great, there a ton of charm to this game, even with all of its flaws.

I know what you mean. SA1 is the closet they came to creating that classic feel in 3D, but the game is so easy to glitch that you have to learn to play it a very certain way. SA2 streamlines stuff a bit and is more functional for it but of course loses some of that freedom. In part I put that slightly on the games being ahead of their time, maybe if they had worked on the formula instead of gimmicks it could have worked out. Or maybe the style will inherently break games. High speed + momentum + big jumps will lead to some wacky stuff. I think the reason Sonic has become more linear is they simply developing something bigger is more than they could handle.

Sonic Adventure 2 is a game you can always remember fondly when it was fresh and new and exciting. I think the core speed theme of sonic just doesn't translate well into 3d.

Of course the characters are memorable, it's fuckin Mr. Vidya, vidya's mickey mouse. Not to mention Mario has far superior games, nobody's gonna deny that.

But the only 3D Mario I've seen that people seem to discuss/remember more than SA2 is 64. People talk about 64 all the time, but Sunshine, Galaxy 1 & 2, and even Odyssey at this point seem to not really get brought up as much anymore outside speedruns. Of course they're better games, but from what I've seen, they're just not as memorable experiences.
