In ancient times if you had to go around a castle ( which VERY few people ever got to do ) at night, you'd light a candle and bring it with you.

Locks are pretty basic concept and have only been getting constant innovations for about the past 200 years. The problem with locks back when is that manufacturing the small parts for them is very difficult without modern equipment. So locks were pretty basic.
