lads i just killed him in his world when you get the prompt that the black orb is quivvering or whatever. All I know is, one time i went to firelink and the bonfire lady was dead, next i know the black orb is activating in anor londo hall so i used it and he was there.

Did i miss a step? Is there some lore i was supposed to come across? How do yo uguys know this stuff that you posted about?

You find his armour set a little later on.

He sits directly opposite the fire keeper after you free him from the parish church (or if you didn't free him appears there anyway after you defeat the gargoyles) and hints that he's going to do something with the fire keeper if you talk to him a few times.

I doubt it. Theres a hollow soldier knight dude guarding his prison, a channeler and several smaller hollows further down. And Patches screws people by trapping them in ditches with promises of treasure. Hes in a small cell with stairs.
