Once you get to the gameplay strategising they're already playing Washizu mahjong which has its own ruleset due to see-through tiles. So none of that applies here either.
And yet simultaneously Saki is a "sports" manga where players have "signature moves" they can and will pull off every other match, because they have literal super powers that allow them to ignore the small details like random chance.

Washizu, who's now in a wheelchair, is always on his heels but never able to catch up to him.

The basics of tile efficiency can be intuited just by understanding the rules and playing. It's just asking how many tiles can any given type of tile accept to improve the hand. An east wind can only accept other east winds, so the likelihood of pairing up a lone one is low. But a 5pin can connect to a 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7pin so you're much more likely to make a complete meld with it.

I've actually played multiple times with an American mahjong set with the flat tiles and the trays to keep them standing up. The guy who owned it would have wanted to play with the American ruleset as well that uses multiple jokers and a very restricted set of winning hands (i.e. yaku) which is changed every year. Thankfully we never did.

As far as I know the acceptable winning hands are much the same as in riichi magjong and many other variants. It's just that because there are so many jokers (8 or 12 I think) you can luck out with that they started to restrict which specific "yaku" can be declared as a winning hand. Then they mix it up each year so you don't have to aim for the exact same two or three hand every year.
That's what the guy used to say as well. They're fine, really. I just don't like to use a separate tray for the tiles when the thicker tiles stand up on their own just fine. The tray can be a bit flimsy as well, and it can't be really used to reveal your hand hand in a silly or dramatic manner. If you topple it too fast, the tiles will just scatter on the table.

In my experince chasing 7 pairs isn't worth it, just go for toi toi and if 7 pairs happens to be more likely than calling the table to ron then go for it.

There's a trap like that where people with a 579 will throw 5 but riichi a few turns later to wait on 8 without this being very obvious

Don't fear phantoms. Unless somebody has declared riichi or otherwise shows signs of danger (such as a dora pon), or unless you have like four draws left, you should pretty much always declare riichi with pinfu. With hands cheaper than mangan, every extra han doubles your value, and with pinfu you've most likely got a strong wait.

If you dama pinfu nomi on Tenhou, people will laugh at you.

If you're playing against strong opponents, you're just giving them free information and telling them that your hand has advanced, and some players can see through it altogether and deduce real information about your hand. Against weak opponents, it's just wasted effort. There are times when you should discard the same tile from your hand, but by default you're better off just discarding the tile you drew.

It's hard to lose as well. Online mahjong is all about not getting 4th place. And even if this was real life mahjong, knowing how to defend instead of forcing every single hand is valuable knowledge to place 1st

He had no hand in the first place and Urabe had a really fast one. Kanning and dropping dora was how he got him to fold. Getting a houtei ron was a combination of coincidence and recognizing a classic pair drop, but the aim was getting the guy to fold and tenpai at all

Naturally if you're in first place in S2 or later and you have a decent lead already (enough that second place can tsumo mangan and still not catch up) then your focus should be on passing the rounds quickly and safely, but in east round and in flat situations you should absolutely be prioritizing the EV of your own hand rather than getting paranoid and overcautious for no good reason.

If anything, that just makes 69 look more dangerous. Regular suji traps from throwing akadora are more effective.

How does that make the 6 look safe? It's a very logical cut to make, since pinfu adds the same extra 1 han that the red dora does

EV of a late game riichi pinfu when other ponds are looking dangerous (middle tiles and/or doras discarded) isn't exactly good. Plus there's the riichi stick. Once again it depends on the points but sometimes you're better off laying low, because your riichi won't have the same impact as a turn 5 riichi.

It makes the area around red 5 seem slightly safer because an ideal scenario like 578 doesn't happen very often, and it's more likely that you made a ryanmen with another suit or somewhere else.

But yeah, it's more effective if you combine it with a suji trap, waiting on 8. It won't work on people who go 100% betaori but some people will take chances.

Point is yes if you start out with a bunch of pairs and keep drawing pairs go ahead and go for chitoitsu, but making adjustments is really imporant in this game, and toi toi san dou and sanankou all have 2 han with the advantage of opening and pon-nya~ crazy. Toitoi is statistically harder to get than 7 pairs. It's a noob trap.

You can bring in any number of analogue considerations to nitpick, but that's not the point. Strategy in mahjong is about learning the theory first (pinfu = riichi) and then learning the exceptions to the theory, and then learning the exceptions to those exceptions and so on.

It certainly does happen often enough. The difference between cutting a red 5 as opposed to a regular 5 is that 36 and 47 appear much safer because normally you'd rather keep the dora, so discarding it means that it didn't come out from 556 or 455. Against good players who understand this (and you'd be hard pressed to find many people like that even in tokujou on Tenhou), you can use this as a trap to wait on 3 or 7 (and incidentally, stats have found that 37 against a riichi with a red 5 discard are as safe as suji), but if it's not matagi suji then the urasuji 1469 become very suspicious.

I wouldn't say it's that ideal? 5 78 can easily turn into 56 78 early on. If anything, it's more unlikely that the rest of your hand starts off so perfect that you don't need the chance of an extra ryanmen, instead of being a jumbled mix of edge and middle waits

I'm not nitpicking, I'm discussing cases where pinfu isn't a good riichi. Late games are some of those cases because your chances of winning 2000-3900 are comparable to your chances of getting devastated by oikake. Especially with few doras visible.

I've heard that statistically chiitoitsu takes an average of 11 turns to get from iishanten to tenpai. With every shanten you advance, it gets hugely slower to take the next step. That's why it should always be your last resort. If a normal hand is doable, you should absolutely go for that instead, and if that's not an option, you should consider toitoi if you meet conditions listed here mahjong.guide/2017/11/08/toitoi-dash/. Only go for chiitoitsu if you don't meet those conditions.

Can't you make adjustments to chiitoitsu just as easily? If anything it should be easier than toitoi since you aren't locking in parts of your hand by calling. Really the only time you're too far to turn back is when you have 5 pairs, and at that point you're already 1 tile away from tenpai

If you want to cope, you can start to blame the game to be rigged as fuck. It was like that in Janryuumon which I played for 2 years, Tenhou I was much less lucky but Tenhou at the same time felt like playing in real life, with many a round ending in Ryuukyoku (exhaustive draws).

I think the idea is to at least stack the hand to some level so everyone has more fun on average and spends more money. It would make sense even.

Too many 9s for even bothering with quick tanyao or pinfu. Depending on draws maybe sanshoku on triplets of 5 or 9, or 5-6-7. Last resort hit the C and hope for quick riichi-only tenpai.

I mean it's literally the same hand, you do toi toi for the same reason you do chitoitsu. The difference is one hand requires you to get multiple triplets from other people mostly and pray you'll get your 2 yaku hand in time because you have no defence. The other one just need pairs and you'll eventually drew them because of specific state of the game and discards. Besides it's far easier to make a mangan even without riichi. It's just that chitoitsu is a better choice in 8 out of 10 games. Honestly do you expect people to throw you 3 4, 5, 6, 7? It's just praying.
