I have an old ass cpu from 2014 or 15. its an i5 and its clocked at 3.9 GHz. thats all i know really. i need to know the best cpu i can get that will give me plenty of performance. i have a 1070 and 16gb ram.

well your limited by your motherboard because intel kills sockets every year, so lookup whatever the newest cpu your board can support is. spoilers: you need a new motherboard.

Why? What you need a better CPU for?
If for just vydia your CPU will work fine for the next 5 years if not more easy
If you have money to throw just go with a Ryzen 7 or wait for Ryzen 3000, just never ever buy Intel CPUs again

Wait for the new Ryzens. I'm in the same boat and have a 6600k. I'm not going to spend anymore than I did for it which was like $230 and anything for that price right now I'll pass on.
