I had to try about three times before I really watched it. I made it about 5 episodes in the first time, maybe a couple more the next. Then something clicked and one day I literally said "fuck I'm missing out on something with this" so I stayed up until sunrise the next day finishing it and the experience was wild. Since then it's taken its place among other sci-fi for me that's formed my current opinions on technology and AI, the coming second Renaissance. Rushkoff's Cyberia was a fun read after this to further understand 90s cyber-psychedelic culture, also Moravec's Mind Children is a good entry to more post-80s thought processes regarding tech and its evolution into a living thing

Girl discovers the internet, slowly becomes God over time because of reasons, has a few identity crises along the way and a few third partied are interested in what's happening to her for various reasons. Moral of the story is don't deep dive so hard into the internet that you lose sight of who you really are, more or less. This is all wrapped up in a package with slow pacing and psychedelic art.

Lain is one of these shows Yea Forums loves to elevate to some kind of mystical masterpiece status, never to be rivaled again, when in fact it's a lot of technobabble and pseudo-philosophy leading to nowhere. The creators themselves have admitted they didn't even know what they wanted to say and just hoped the audiences would come up with theories about their barely coherent narrative. While it does touch upon some interesting topics like that of self-identity and ego but it's certainly not the first nor the best at it remains content having half of its already short runtime be filled of Lain being autistic and staring into space.

TL;DR: Overrated pretentious work, a shame I seemed an honest man, etc.

I wouldn't call it pretentious so much as needlessly obscure. A lot of Lain's aesthetics and narrative amounts to atmospheric fluff. Not quite pointless as it makes it a great show to zen out to but separate the wheat from the chaff and Lain's narrative really isn't that complex at all. I think it'd be a lot more boring if it played things straight, there's something about its particularly languid flow that makes it perfect for marathoning in a dark room, half awake until the sun is starting to rise.

Keep pushing with that show. Aside from a couple of characters I found Texhnolyze nigh insufferable for the first half but man, shit takes off on the back end.

As it turns out, the worldwide interpretation was more or less the same which disappointed the creators a little bit. I finally got round to watching Haibane Renmei last month. For some reason I was expecting a horror anime, probably due to seeing the scene where Rakka grows her wings years ago and my only ABe show before it being Texhnolyze. What a beautiful show, it instantly jumped up into my favourites and then I rewatched it this weekend and fell completely in love. A lot of the characters issues struck really close to home, I've never felt such a bond with other shows I've seen, anime or not.

Funny you mention those two shows. Haibane is my first favorite (got me into anime) and Princess Tutu sits in my top 10 favs, alongside Lain.

Honestly Haibane would be a pretty great introduction to anime. No fanservice and a beautiful story. My personal gateway was Lain, oddly enough.

His use of earthy tones and the painterly style that emulates painting, imo, is what allows his artstyle to remain timeless.

God Nakamura passing is the fucking worst. He's pretty much the reason for the surreal soundscapes and visuals of SEL. I can't imagine a SEL like show without him at the helm it just wouldn't be the same
