Well between Blackhand, Doomhammer, Thrall's character, Garrosh, Vol'jin, and probably Sylvanas the position is a fucking death sentence.

It's not just that, it's the active attempts at perpetuating the faction war. In Vanilla they never made a big deal about it, the two factions were two spheres who would occasionally fight but nothing as grand as an outright war. Most BGs were even ran but "sub-factions" like Stormpikes or the Defilers.

Then some retards in the forums asked "Why don't we have some actual stories about the two sides fighting?" and then we got the shitfest that was Cataclysm. I remember the entire time it was endless shitflinging on the lore forums about "fairness" and "horde bias" and countless other shit, including the entire origin of "WE HAVE TO MAKE SYLVANAS A RAID BOSS NOW!" shit that's only grown worse over the years.
Blizzard should have learned right then and there that the community was expecting a weird "stalemate" war with even victories and even losses and blizzard being blizzard was incapable of doing this without people getting mad. Alliance writing is intentionally made dull to keep them as generic as a skin as possible for normies, so they don't have room to do anything interesting. The horde doesn't have this problem, so the Cdevs, as terrible as they are as writers, still have far more fun writing horde shit which was inevitably the reason for why Cata and even MoP created such a massive horde focus good or bad.

WotLK should have wrapped up the faction war beyond maybe potential bullshit with Garrosh, Cata should have happened a lot differently.

The Alliance is a very poor character, most of its lore is ironically horde since the most well developed human faction fell to undeath.
Stormwind had no identity and was basically invented with WoW. It's involvement as the center of WC1 really doesn't matter, more human development was placed in Lordearon.

Without an interesting premise for the human identity, there is no real drive for the alliance identity since Dwarven lore is again, all far history and nothing current except for maybe their personal clan tension bullshit. Night elves likewise are incredibly confused as their core lore was raped in order to make them fit with the alliance more.

The issue is less about the alliance "just randomly starting" and more about "has the alliance ever?". The alliance hardly has a history, this is what makes it so easy for lawful good retards to project their own sense of right to them. The alliance should have realistically done some bad things over the course of the franchise, but they haven't compared to the horde, they haven't really done anything.

Their past lives lost all meaning. It was some interesting shit, sadly only a bit of it has retained canon (I.E the forgotten shadow shit turned out to be Void bullshit written by some Lordaeron priestess or something, they never really expanded on its importance with the Forsaken)
