It was a more innocent time, wasn't it? When memes were memes in the classical sense of the term and not just "funny thing on social media/pop culture reference" and they were obtuse and esoteric.

There must have been a timeline shift in 2010. It's so weird that the world started sucking as suddenly as it did.

Y2K was the start of it all

I feel pretty fucking old

Nah, that was just people blowing a minor bug way out of proportion. I think the rise of social media was when shit started hitting the fan. Surprise surprise, Twitter and Facebook boomed in 2010, and Instagram was founded that year.

epic, epic ftw! winrar xD

i just realized i've been shitposting and calling anons faggots for over a decade.
i've wasted my fucking life. what am i doing here?

Everything has been on a downward decline since 2000

Global warming is a lie, though.

Angry German Kino

When did I mention global warming?

I guess it depends on your perspective. I'm a bit biased, but the 2000s were pretty comfy for me. We definitely weren't as divided as we are now, since even Republicans thought Bush was a fucking idiot. I guess you could argue having a black president brought a bunch of skeletons back to life, but 2009 was also a pretty good year. I really think megacorporations promoting social media and smartphones as "the new way" while their Zoomer lemmings follow mindlessly is the number one culprit.

Not really anything as dramatic as a timeline shift. The end of the '00s and the start of '10 is basically marked by the rise of the major social networks, like Facebook and twitter, and the general consolidation of the internet.

In 2007 I had a Youtube account like a lot of people, but I was also watching video game frag videos and the like on stuff like vimeo, and like most people had spent quite a bit of the late 90s, early '00s on Newgrounds and other Flash joints. I didn't really use social media, but I know people were divided between Friendster, MySpace, the nascent Facebook, but of course a lot of people just had their own private forums. I had quite a few in my bookmarks. They're gone now, abandoned, URL just goes to a generic host.
But 5 years later in 2012? Youtube's grown much more sophisticated. Most people don't even remember when we joke about shitty grainy gifs being run through a Youtube filter, or when they'd have 5 stars, and the most popular video was the evolution of dance. Now it's where all the video on the internet is expected to be. Live television and streaming is on there. Amateur animators don't post on Newgrounds anymore, you see them on Youtube.
And of course, where do you go outside of Youtube to talk about things? On Facebook, twitter, and instagram. Maybe if you don't want your face associated to it, you'll go to reddit or tumblr for their more insular classic feel of assigning stuff to usernames and communicating through their own kind of slang, which are still one of the most trafficked websites in the world daily.

Everything on the public internet basically runs through 5-8 sites these days.

2006-ish oldfag here. I remember distinctly being banned for a month and coming back and /tg/ and a few other boards having been born.

Would you prefer having wasted it on reddit, or twitter or facebook?

2001 was a major step down, 2007/2008 was a major step down, then 2014 and 2016 and 2021.

Yeah I'd have to agree for the most part. I feel the cultural decline started in fall of '09, around October or November, and 2010 was the first full-on bad year (culturally). I make sure to specify culturally so that some smartass doesn't respond with "durrr there's no such thing as a golden age".

Its my 22nd birthday today and this keeps popping up in my head, why the fuck was I even posting here in 2009? I was like 12 at most and im pretty sure I discovered this place through FunnyJunk or some shit lile that. I dont even think I posted a single thing until around 2011. I think my fondest memory of this place is when /out/ became a thing and I started one of the first major threads on the entire board.

Unironic real lives.
We are the ones who will be dabbled on in the end.
The ones who didnt make it.

Attached: 99459893.png (415x329, 121K)

Some of them didn't make it.

It would take every user's assistance to revive old memes.

It's hard not to think of the internet of the 00s as kind of a paradise lost now. Now it's all just a bunch of marketing agencies, different flavours of American , Russian and Chinese alphabet soups, people hired by think tanks all across the political spectrum and a bunch of chucklefucks blindly repeating their rhetoric.

I miss the old days when it was less centralized, less commercialised, less politicised and less ironic.

Go get the Instant Oldfag Kit and just spam those memes everywhere, man

OP has been doing it for a month, and have you not noticed the uptick of oldfagposting?

It can be revived.

Dragon Quest XI. Jesus fucking Christ that is a long game. VII's still the absurdly longest but XI is fresh in my mind as a holy-shit long game.

The era of classic memes are a bygone thing, but they live on in their modern incarnations.
Just don't forget what the real magic of memes was and always is: OC

Jews and Israel isn't much of a thing site wide.
So the intense focus on them doesn't make sense.

Image Macros, while not necessarily awful 100% of the time, were the beginning of the end.

I wish flash wasn't full of security holes and it could be alive.

Source of webm?

>simple format, literally just a picture of a dog
>basically only need two lines to convey the rest of the idea
>so simple people literally just generators that slap bold capitalized IMPACT text on any picture you want
>rinse and repeat everywhere

I don't think it's necessarily responsible, but it did arrive at the right time to be easily digestible, spread and mutate.
Hell, Impact's been the default text for image macros for a long ass time. You just slap it on fucking anything, there's your meme.
