2 was among the worst though.

This, Gen 2 built on Gen 1 in an excellent manner, then Gen 3 was a billion steps back even if I do like the Pokemon it introduced, even going so far as to rip out the day/night system. Gen 4 went back to progressing normally and iterated on mechanics excellently, with the physical/special split being huge. Gen 5 had a lot of effort put into it and had fantastic presentation, and provided players with two games that provided both a very fresh Pokemon experience that deviated from the series' norms and left you to ONLY catch new Pokemon as well as a game that offered you all of the choices up to that point and returned the formula to normal if you preferred it that way.

Then Gen 6 was super low effort and Gen 7 had like 5 new Pokemon in it (though I do love Trials as a concept they probably could have been executed better). What the fuck?

Fucking this, you had pokemon getting fucked over because their STABS were either physical or special, and if you were a Ghost or Dark, you were pretty much fucked.

That's just not true. Abilities weren't as ridiculously strong as they are now but they were still often very noticeable. For example in my team I am using Aaron who does not take recoil damage and Gulpin who deals damage to people who drain him.

Gamefreak decided to try and make the games cinematic, for lack of a better word. Even outside of story cutscenes, you have pre-battle cutscenes for important NPCs that seem like they take an eternity.

It's because GF is beyond incompetent when it comes to the actual development. The reason why the 3D games absolutely chug is because they can't optimize code for shit and they for some reason refuse to hire the talent that can.

I think Tyrannitar was the only Dark-type not to get completely fucked in the beginning because he was such a beast. It sucks going back to the GBA games and remembering the split didn't existed when they made them, so I have all these pokemon that will never meet their potential.

Gen 4 had good content but had a fucked up ending. It got fixed by HGSS, but obviously that's just a Johto remake.
Gen 5 had a mix of good ideas and bad ideas. People had big problems with it, but the most vocal dissidents (mostly normalfags) disliked it for the wrong reasons, complaining about the Dex rather than the overly linear region. Game Freak decided to listen to these people, keeping the bad parts of Gen 5 with overly linear, story-based games for the rest of time but also adding an endless amount of superficial Kanto pandering.

LGPE was our last shot for things to get better. It was so terrible, and looked so terrible from the first trailer, that it might have caused even the most casual players to say "okay this is too dumbed down, I'm skipping this one," and then Nintendo would have probably stepped in and told Game Freak to get their shit together after it underperformed. Instead of that happening though, LGPE are the best-selling Pokémon games of all time after the original Gen 1 games. Our future is sealed and Pokémon will never recover from the state it's in.

The funny part about ORAS coming out 12 years after the originals is that it meant I could play the originals as child, but then play remakes as one old enough to understand how calculated they were. They are not bereft of good, I'm not surprised both Dryano and Dio Vento have made overhauls for them, but they also smack of the Game Freak B team challenging themselves to see how quickly they can get out a reasonably complete game. Of course, R/S were probably the first games to have elements that would never get their due in the best case since these remakes ultimately have to be samey enough to be easier to make.

Literally every game since gen 3 besides some remakes have followed this formula and I'm so fucking sick of it.

They fixed things but it wasn't enough. The new engine makes battles faster, new learnsets and phys/spec split made more pokemon viable, and the safari zone kind of helps the distribution problem.

Sadly the safari zone is found about halyway through the Johto campaign, trainers still have poorly put together teams, and late game is annoying since everything in the wild is level 25 while trainers have pokemon in the 40's.

BW/BW2 have a lot going for it besides its linearity and shitmon.

Ledian was always awful, there's not much you can do to make it viable even in the main game.

The split was really helpful for a fuckton of pokemon though. Take Feraligatr or Gyrados, both pretty popular pokemon since one's a starter and the other is a free shiny. Before it was basically pointless to teach them water type attacks since those were based on the special stat, both have garbage special attack stats. Now both had access to their main STAB AND could use their primary attacking stat.

The consensus is still that Gen 1-5 is better than anything that came after. People just like fighting over individual generations, and they did that too before the election.

It's just that so many people use this argument so much that it's become a stereotype of itself; Garbador and Stoutland aren't even the worst designed pokemon in that game.
