I beat the elite 4 with this team at these levels. there's only a level curve problem if you brute force the game with only one pokemon, or if you fight every single wild encounter, and if you do either of those you don't expect the game to conform to your play style. the distribution is bad. there's no reason for there to be johto pokemon that aren't available in johto. hgss made it a bit better by putting some of them in the safari zone, but that's just a bandaid
I just don't see that at all. a valid argument would be that most of johto's praise comes from it being comfy more so than from any gameplay aspects, although even then there are a lot of johto pokemon that people really like

The biggest problem with gen 2, this includes the remakes, is complete lack of pokemon diversity. Compared to almost every game, the diversity is SHIT. When I play soul silver or heart gold, I get the drayano rom hacks for those games as they are a MUST because they increase poke diversity an insane amount and give access to all kinds of pokes. If it wasnt for that problem they would indeed be the best in the series but its such a huge problem it holds them back.

You expect II to be a sequel to I, but by the late entries, you really don't need to constantly be referencing the defining works. It panders to nostalgia and makes everything in the world gravitate around the beginning when the beginning was great because it was a new refreshing concept and you didn't know what to expect. It's as exciting as a live-action Disney remake. It's like they have no confidence in making their new stuff stick so they just keep milking a dead cow.

hell they could even make wild pokemon scale a bit and the explanation for why there'd be fully evolved bird pokemon in their route 1 equivalent could be that all evolutions of a species live in groups together, and the stronger pokemon come out when stronger trainers appear to protect the weaker pokemon of the flock.

It’s better to have handcrafted instead, because if you level scale it, the game will tie to your level, there will never be any sort of difficulty because everything will be equal.

This is false, I'm 4 gyms in and on par with everyone, you only become overleveled by soloing.
Are there any challenge runs that are actually fun? I've tried nuzlockes before but they always just end up being "focus grind whatever you have that beats the next area or else your whole team dies"

Not really. The majority of Gen V Pokémon had crappy designs and the ones with good designs were found late in the game. I filled my team up with Dreamworld Pokémon as soon as I could because the designs were so bad.

I had fun once doing a themed nuzlocke run with some custom rules. Focused on Poison types and had a tool that replaced the starter with my favorite poisonmon then the first route had 3 others I wanted. These central 4 I would never replace if they died and I would only have a 5th/6th if i stumbled upon another poison type in a route. No duplicates even of different evolutions.
It puts you in a place of strategy and somewhat impossible situations pending your favored type and the generation you're playing. Just avoid letting yourself fall into the trap of "I can just grind 10 levels and be done" and try to figure something out.

Monotype can be fun, although I only tried it in a Drayano hack so I had all mons to choose from, some of the shitmons were better, good TMs were given earlier etc

Baby Pokemon exist for certain moves and to push the breeding mechanic in Gen II along with filling some holes a few lines may have (Snorlax with Munchlax later on).
