Depends on what you're willing to practice. I used to do 100 dp's and 100 qcf on both sides until I could do all 100 in a row without messing up the input. If you drop you start from 0 again and keep going until you do 100 then repeat on the opposite side. Once you've got your specials down, do the same for combos on both sides and then once you have combos down try it vs the cpu. Also it's good to just practice blocking vs highest level cpu for an at least 30 minutes per day

I use my old SFIV TE that's slightly altered. Some fightpads are nice but I fumble a lot when using them. Usually if I'm playing a friend new to any game I'll use my hori fc4 pad since it kinda handicaps me.
